Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Did you guys

Did you guys know that Asian-American students have to score 140 points more on their SATs than white students, 270 points more than Hispanics and 450 points more than African-Americans to get the same stupid chance at getting into Harvard?!

Whywhywhywhywhy?!!!!!

And many colleges require homeschoolers to achieve higher grades and test scores than the average public school student. I myself have gone through this discrimination when graduating and when I was looking into colleges.

Discrimination comes in many forms, no one is ever left uneffected. While the these facts are unfair, it's just one form of many.  It does not mean any one group is treated especially worse than another. In America we truly have achieved equality, even though it isn't perfect. Honestly, I think bringing constant, special emphasis to just one like this is like asking for pity. I'm not saying it should be ignored, but there's a heck of a lot wrong with this world. There's a heck of a lot wrong in this country. I can guarantee my family and I have had to work just as hard in the academic, social, and career world as any immigrant. I'm born American, it doesn't make me automatically priviledged other than this country has God's grace on it and I can durn well work to make a place for myself in this world. So discrimination isn't fair, but whining doesn't help. Sometimes we just have to suck it up and keep going.

In America, we have truly achieved equality?

Tell that to the children bullied by the Oscars with their "jokes".

Tell that to basically any Muslim person, discriminated at the airport, with everyone thinking they are terrorists.

Tell that to Peter Liang, used as a SCAPEGOAT because the legal system apparently can't spare their precious white officers, so instead they hurt an Asian one.

Tell that to all the Latinos bullied by Donald Trump.

Tell that to Vincent Chin, whose life apparently has a value of less than $4000, because of his almond eyes.

Tell that to almost any Asian person. The slurs are everywhere. "Go back to China!" "It's because of you [CENSORED] that we're out of work." "Can you even SEE out of eyes that small?" "Where are you FROM?!"

Tell that to all the Asian people who applied to an Ivy League, and didn't get in, not because they aren't good enough, but because THEY LOOK DIFFERENT!!!

Tell that to practically any African American person who was killed by a white police officer. The white people were never convicted!

Tell that to S.E, what with the dumb blonde jokes.

Like you said, tell that to homeschoolers.

Besides, if there's a "heck of a lot wrong" with this world, isn't that all the reason more to talk about and try to change it?

Mei-xue, we DO try to change it.

Ok?

And guess what? I think Peter Liang DID do something wrong. He reacted COMPLETELY wrong to the situation. Yes, white police officers are not convicted of things they should, but that doesn't make Liang a scapegoat. And there are white polie officers who are guilty and not convicted.

It's all MESSED UP. And you can't always change it.

He wasn't even trained properly! There are white officers who are extremely guilty and not convicted. If, say, eleven white people do something bad, one of which is a person of color, the rest of which are white, and then the person of color is the ONLY PERSON who gets in trouble, doesn't something look wrong The black community was so riled up about what those white police did to them, the government wanted to calm them down. However, they couldn't spare any of the white police officers.

So how, exactly, was he not a scapegoat?

Admin, why are you not posting this?

As I'veexplained before, I don't have time to check out the truth of the statements you make. The person who is may do that is on vacation till June 1. So it won't be posted till at least then. Resubmitting the same thing won't bring it up any sooner.

Besides, did Rosa Parks "suck it up"? Did Martin Luter King? Did Susan B. Anthony? No! They fought. They, as you put it, "whined".

And in the end, they got their way.

Yes, I wasn't lazy and read this whole thread with all of its comments, but I'm not joining the conversation, really, just commenting on the thread itself.

WHAT? Excuse the capitals. WHY do they think that different races have different.... Brain types or something. That is really unfair. Why can't everyone have the same academic expectations?!?! And 450 more points than African Americans? But only 140 more than white people? Does that mean I have to get a higher score than African Americans?

I know, right? You have to score 310 points higher than Africans, because your skin isn't dark enough?! What a twist.

SO UNFAIR!!!

To be honest, I've been reading this, and there seemed to be one thing wrong with the whole thread, and I think I finally get it.

Mei, you're screaming about stereotypes, right? How everyone stereotypes Asian people, about their brainpower and looks, about how every Muslim is looked on with a distrustful eye because of ISIS and Donald Trump.

You know what that is?
That's stereotyping.

A good portion of the people in my school are Asian. Does this mean I look at them and think, Oh, gosh, they're so smart I could never compete with them? Does it mean I look at them and think, They look funny!? No! Of course not. I think, Oh, look, there's Alice. There's Tracy. There's Jason. And I've got many African American friends, and I would never, NEVER think, Oh, I'm always going to do better than them because of their race. No. I would think, That's Leah. There's Niah.

What I'm pointing out is this. The world is not against anyone. When the black slaves were fighting for their freedom, there were white people on their side. When the women were fighting for equality, there were men on their side. No matter what, there will always be people who don't believe in stereotypes. There will be people who will. And the media will exaggerate it and twist it until it's become a horror. Look at how far America's progressed! And look at it honestly. I know how the Asians were treated at Angel Island-- I learned about it. Are they doing that now? Are there still African American men in chains? Are women still not allowed to vote? We're doing the best we can, and we've gotten far. We are not perfect. Nobody is perfect. It is in our nature to try to make ourselves superior to others, and we do it in cruel and twisted ways. But we will not stop trying.

It is good to stand up for what you need. But you have to acknowledge the good as well as the bad. And there is a lot of good in this world. All we need to do is remember it.

Yes, they are still unfairly arresting black people. Women are paid less than men.

Two men murdered a Chinese guy, using baseball bats, thinking he was Japanese, yelling, "It's because  of you mother[Censored] that we lost our jobs!" No, that's not the worst part. His murderers didn't spend a day in jail.

About acknowledging the good… Actually, you have a point. Why not make a thread for doing just that?

About the stereotyping: Where did I say "everyone"?

I know black people are still being unfairly treated. I know women are paid less than men. But they aren't in chains. They're voting. We're improving, Mei. That doesn't mean we've achieved what we want yet. We're still working on it, but we're working on it, Mei, and that's something, right?

And about the stereotyping: you didn't say "everyone," but you didn't say "some people," either. In some occasions, not saying one thing can be translated to the opposite.

Also, did you guys know that for the Vietnam War, drill instructors told the peers of Asian American servicemen "This is what the enemy looks like"? In fact, one Asian remembers a gummy sergeant saying, "Chong, Fang, Fond, or whatever your [censored] name is, ... Are you are Viet Cong spy? That's it. Go ahead and cry. We don't want babies around here."

UGHUGHUGHWHYWHYWHYWHY?!?!?!?!!!!!!!

Oh, and I forgot to mention the Japanese internment camps. None more said.
