Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Did you guys

Did you guys know that Asian-American students have to score 140 points more on their SATs than white students, 270 points more than Hispanics and 450 points more than African-Americans to get the same stupid chance at getting into Harvard?!

That's idiotic! No one should be held to a different standard in such things. We should take this to court.

It's not the best idea to bring up the Asian Privilege myth on a thread talking about how we are disadvantaged…Just saying. Also, crack a hurtful joke about African Americans. You'll get suspended from school, or at least in trouble. Then crack a hurtful one about Asian Americans. They will tell whoever the joke is directed to that it was "just a joke" and "it's true, anyways". Xiǎo tùzǐ say cnnn. Do you watch CNN, Xiǎo tùzǐ?

Besides, how can you say, "No, you don't want" when you don't live inside my brain? How can you assume I'm not a powerhungry Slytherin who would give up anything, race included, to achieve her high hopes and dreams?

How do you know that I'm not so cold and calculating that I see my race as an obstacle and only an obstacle?

DON'T GO INTO AN IVY LEAGUE, ESPECIALLY HARVARD!

Sorry about that, but my mom went to Yale and said it was very tough to stay afloat financially and she went into a depressive spiral at one point. She was fine, but said that it was the most exhausting experience she'd every had and she did NOT recommend it for ANYONE.

Harvard especially has the HIGHEST suicide rate. Please don't go to an Ivy.

*Waves hand* Oh, I can handle Harvard.

I just think they just won't let me in. :(

Oookay, I mean, I considered Yale, but... my mom says it really isn't worth it.

Also, be careful about the "pfft I can handle it!" thing, because I've done that and ended up very wrong.

@SE--

You said it yourself--he was untrained. According to you, the only bad thing he did was stand around and talk about losing his job.

In my book, people don't spend 2 years in jail for standing around and saying, "I'm gonna lose my job".

And yes, he did do something bad. He freaked out and shot a wall randomly, with terrible consequences.

Uh...hey, guys.

So this is the debate part of the CB. I get the idea, it's cool. But then I come in and see this. I'm just going to add my two cents, if anybody cares or not, and even though my socially anxious butt wants to pull out of here and stay neutral, I just can't sit here and not say anything.

I come from a city that is less than 40% whites.

You can drive over the Mexican border in a day or two.

And you know what? That's what I love about my city.

It's so completely populated with people of all colors, shapes and sizes that almost - almost - in a Southern city, what people see as a racist city - people can almost get the same chance.

Sure, we've got your whites, got your African-Americans and Hispanics, and an Asian community that's big and growing by the day. My friends are of all colors and I love them all to death.

No, life isn't fair. And no, that statement does not make me a bystander. We can say the world is not fair and then go out and do our best to change it. The way I choose to change it - in little ways - is that I respect people of all colors. I see them as people I like or don't like, family and the honorary family that is my friends.

No, life isn't fair. But maybe, we can all just do our best to oppose the unfairness - to, when we grow up to be activists and artists, scientists or officers of the law, treat everyone with the same respect, and love who we love or hate who we hate, no matter the color.

Maybe we can be that generation that makes police officers who will arrest that white guy if he's broken the law, no matter what. Maybe we'll be that generation of bloggers who, instead of bashing fellow humans, encourages positivity and to fight for what's right. Maybe we'll be the screenwriters who include a range of diverse characters in their blockbuster movie.

I'll say it again, life isn't fair. But if we start acting on it now - stop seeing our color as something that defines us and rather something we can be proud of - just maybe we can make it fair by the time we hit adulthood and start gaining positions and occupations that matter. And even though there will always be racists and homophobes, bigots and jerks, we can push hard for those jerks to wake up and smell the coffee - the whole country is against them.

So how about it, guys? How about we be the generation that fixes the U.S. of A.?

Call me a romantic, but I believe we can do it.
