Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Whywhywhywhywhy?!!!!!

Mei-xue, LISTEN. You DON'T HAVE TO BE 450 POINTS HIGHER. IT'S AN AVERAGE. POSSIBlY because STUDENTS SCORE HIGHER. IT'S NOT SOMETHING YOU NEED TO WORRY ABOUT NOW. SC EXPLAINED IT PERFECTLY WELL.

Hey SC! Nice to hear from you!

It's just an average; meaning I think I'll have to score HIGHER the 450 points higher, because I'll be appying for the Ivies.

Mei-xue, TEST SCORES mean very little in college application. They do a bit, but it's an OVERALL student profile that causes you to get in.

I am THIRTEEN. In school, we took a practice SAT (just like an official one) because a lot of us do stuff that need an SAT score (and yes, I am positive it's not SSAT).

I got 1500 on the 1600 point scale. In seventh grade. It isn't hard.  If colleges ONLY qualified applicants by their SAT score, then there WOULD NOT be a lot of diversity of interest on campus, and that would be what you learned in high school. To take an SAT. NOTHING. ELSE.

OK?

There is community service, hobbies, sports, overall grades, interests, etc. OK?

I read in the news that they are improving the SAT so that it can predict your college future better than grades.

It isn't true now. It's a TEST. It's a stupid NUMBER. Just like IQ, just like every other stupid test, it's just. a. number. Who cares if I am a 1500 on the SAT? Who cares if I'm a 150-something on a stupid IQ test? It's a NUMBER.

The SAT already had a rehaul this year. It involves less memorization of so-called "SAT vocabulary", has the number of sections condensed, and has less straight-forward questions than the ones before. The math is more word problems than it was before. There's.... I think there's a little more time for it now? I don't remember, sorry.

It's become somewhat like a more confusing but less academically challenging version of the ACT.

It really doesn't tell you much of anything about your college future, unless the extent of your college future is spent doing Algebra II word problems and being able to understand character's emotions in old Russian literature.

It tells about how well you can take tests, how well, you can study for them, etc. And even without the SAT, I think the Ivies discriminate against Asian students.

Hey, SC, long time no see, old friend. How are you doing? What's new with you?

And where exactly did you see that they have to get that much more points? It might not be true and besides, you can always complain to Harvard, not the president. Racism will always exist, you just have to get a lawyer. Not a new president or something.

Pearl, see Politics Thread, p. 20. The figures were in The Wall Street Journal. And I've also been told the same info was in Time magazine.

SC? SC?! Ooo I have heard much about you! :D And I knew it--you guys lurk.

Anyway, I just wanted to say again that I'm truly sorry if I seemed rascist or offended anyone. In case anyone doesn't know, I'm Asian, too.

Well, it was racist, but ya, you're forgiven.

It's funny, though. You literally said (autocorrect originally changed this to soda!) that you didn't not exist! XD

SE, do you think that (trained) white police officers can shoot people and get away with it, but when an ASIAN person shoots someone, a person of COLOR, then it's not okay?

What's not okay is that Liang reacted badly to the situation. He didn't give CPR, he didn't respond, and he mostly just stood there saying, "I'm going to lose my job." It's not that white officers don't do wrong, they do horrible things, but they are separate cases. A bunch of wrongs don't mean racism in that specific case.

As I said, the reason that the didn't give CPR was because the teacher halped him cheat!!! He barely learned!
