Chatterbox: Down to Earth

Religion. Just to

Religion. Just to let you know, Christianity is a pathway to a relationship with God and Heaven. Read the Bible and think again about what you believe. I'll go in depth later, but please tell me about what your religions are and what you believe. :)

I just wanted to find out if she believed the same thing I did. Does anyone else?

Yes, Allison, more or less I do. But I thought we quashed these threads? They tend to get a tad... oh... touchy. *looks helplessly at Lena* Right?

Right, Mary. :) For some reason they seem to keep popping up, though... :/

For goodness' sakes, the religious thread isn't always bad unless you make it that way. People are going to talk about this! It's a natural part of life, and you shouldn't discourage the people who want to discuss it.

It makes me uncomfortable. I wish it wouldn't keep popping up. But somehow no one can stay away from it, so I will just shut my mouth and try to ignore it.

Sorry if that was offensive, but it's the way I feel.

Hmmm, I guess if I have to tell you a denomination I guess I'm reformed Baptist. I'd tell you the name of our church so you could look it up for yourselves if you're interested, but that Admins probably won't let me. I won't come on this thread again - I don't want to say things I'll regret in debates - but there it is. You can look up reformed Baptist, I'm sure, if you're interested. There is no way I can put my entire faith in one post - I'd say I believe the whole Bible, but Catholics and any number of other religions say the same thing, even though they overlook parts of it. (Please don't take offense at that, all of you Catholics, unless it will make you think and start looking - it's a good thing to do, no matter who you are or what religion. Remember, I'm not going to come on here digging through all this to find what you say, so insulting me won't do any good. :P) Ack! Where to start? Fine, I won't. Just go look up reformed Baptist in an encyclopedia or something.

My denomination is Baptist, too. I'm not sure if I've

heard of a reformed Baptist, though. I'll look it up... :)

Hey, that's cool! Ever heard of Charles Spurgeon or Jonathan Edwards? Just curious.

I would like everybody to know that Catholics do not overlook parts of the Bible. In Mass we have Liturgy of the Word (where we read the Bible and sing psalms from it), and Liturgy of the Eucharist (where the priest turns bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ). Just because we have two parts of Mass doesn't mean that we don't take the Bible as seriously as people who don't have the Eucharist.

I respect what everybody believes. I've read the Bible, and I think it's very interesting. Actually, I am very interested in religion. I love to learn about it. I don't think I believe in God. I think that people believe in God because they want to know that there is someone who is watching down over us, taking care of us. But, I think that if there wasn't a God, people would maybe take more responsibility in taking of the planet, or just each other. I think that there shouldn't have to be a book of rules telling you how to live your life. It seems to me that people should just know that it's the right thing to do to be decent and friendly to one another, without worrying about making it into  Heaven. I think that there was a Jesus. But maybe he was just a normal guy who thought that people should be nice to each other. Maybe the stories about him have gotten twisted, like folk tales. Just my ideas.

Why do you think there shouldn't be a book of rules telling you how to live life? We live by rules all the time :). And why do you think everyone should know how to be good and decent to one another? How will they know?

I don't mean to be cruel, but if there isn't a God, how was the world made? The Big-Bang theory?

And, God doesn't tell us how to live our life.  We have free choice!  We can do whatever we want.  But, the best way to live is to follow God's rules, or commandments, so therefore, you can go into heaven.  But God doesn't make us follow Him.

And, I think that people who believe in God would help take care of the earth! People who follow God know to love everyone and to help the earth.  These are also just my opinions, but fellow Catholics, do you agree?

I think there ARE people who may not believe in God, but DO care about other people and the earth. I respect the right of each person to believe in or not believe in God.

Number one, I think there is considerably more proof for the Big Bang theory and evolution than there is for God. Number two, I think your statement about free will, quote, "God doesn't tell us how to live our life.  We have free choice!  We can
do whatever we want.  But, the best way to live is to follow God's
rules, or commandments, so therefore, you can go into heaven." is a bit ridiculous, I'm sorry. Have you ever read the book Going Postal, by Terry Pratchett? It's a good book, you should. Anyway, in it, a criminal is caught, and the ruler of the city says that as his punishment, he will have to work for the Postal Service. However, if he doesn't want to, he can walk out a door and fall to his death. He's still technically given a "choice," but do you see the problem with it? It's the same thing if a person believes God said: "You can live your life however you want, I don't mind, honestly. Really. You can do whatever you want. It's just that if you don't live exactly how I want you to, I'm going to send you to Hell for all of eternity." People who are being blackmailed are given a choice. People who have loved ones held for ransom are still given a choice. Does this make these things morally acceptable? Absolutely not.

I'm in no way saying that it doesn't matter how you live your life, I try to be as good a person as I can be, I'm just disagreeing with the fact that God leaves us with free will.

Oh, and I agree with the admin. I know a huge amount of good people, many of which are very strong atheists.
