Brrring! Brrrrrring! The

Chatterbox: Inkwell

Brrring! Brrrrrring! The

Brrring! Brrrrrring! The old-fashioned phone fairly jumped off the table with excitement.

"Hold your horses!" A tall, athletic girl with a long blonde ponytail called, gathering the phone and cord up into her hands.

"Yellow?" She asked brightly.

"Tonia? Is that you?" A soft, eerie voice asked.

"Ye-yeah!" Answered the girl, a bit shakily, "Hold on a second." Then her voice grew muffled to the mysterious caller as she turned her mouth away and yelled: "JARREN! GET DOWN HERE!" To some other personage.

"Okay, what was that?" The girl asked sweetly, coming back to the phone.

"There's been a disappearance."

"A..." stuttered Tonia, "disappearance?"

"And there will be more than one if you don't listen, you insolent little girl!" Tonia's mouth snapped shut.

"Now, as I was saying, there has been a disappearance, I won't tell you whom or how or when, but I want you to find the missing agent. I will give you one clue: 'harpshicord.' That is all," continued the voice.

"What!" Squeeked Tonia, "but that's impossible!"

"You will not be doing it alone. I have incorporated the help of some very highly respected detectives. They call themselves...The Chatterboxers. Cybers or See-Bee-ers for short. There are more clues than you think there are. You have 2 months. No more, no less. Goodbye." And the line went dead. Tonia clicked through the caller-ID. The last call it reported had been from her brother, Jarren, who had called her house yesterday evening after school. It was as if the mysterious call had never taken place. But it had.

"J-J-Jarren?" She called shakily, looking around for her big brother.

"Right here," he said, more gently than usual, "I heard everything." Tonia swallowed, then whispered: "You know we can't disobey The Agent." In responce, Jarren nodded seriously.

"I guess we'd better find these folks that call themselves 'The Chatterboxers.' "

"This...this is impossible though! No information. Absolutely none. Jarren..." Tonia moaned.

"Stop whining, Sis, this is a life or death situation," her brother responded, clasping her hand in his. And at that wonderful, bonding moment, what appeared to be a pie slammed against their window. And then, exactly 3/4 of a second later, the doorbell rang. The Chatterboxers had arrived.

File 17

Jarren stumbled towards the flashlight beam. He was thinking so hard about keeping his balance on the tossing ground that he didn't notice at first that the walls had changed from earthen to metal. As soon as he noticed this, he realized something else too.

"Dead end!" Jarren said aloud.

"Maybe not," came the voice he heard earlier. The flashlight's beam swung around crazily in the earthquake, but Jarren could make out the silloute of a girl pressed against one of the walls, trying to avoid falling chunks of rock.

"There's something up there," she continued, pointing towards the ceiling, "an air vent or something. But I can't reach it!" Jarren lurched towards her.

"Let me try," he suggested. Jumping up towards the loose square on the ceiling, he kept missing it by inches.

"Give me a boost," the girl said.

"What?"

"I said, 'give me a boost,'" she repeated, her long hair, the color of fall leaves, whipping around her face. Jarren laced his fingers together and held them out. He did this all the time with Tonia. The flashlight illuminated the girl's determined face as she pushed upwards to grab the grating.

"Got it!" She yelled over the noise of the earthquake. Slowly, she yanked loose the small square of ceiling and wiggled into the space above. A few seconds later, a hand reached out to grab Jarren's. After much grunting and pulling, both earthquake escapees crouched safely in the air vent.

"Okay," said the girl, breathing heavily. "we escaped that one...by the way, I'm September."

"I'm Jarren...Oh no!" He exclaimed as he suddenly remembered, "Cortanna! I left her in the cavern!"

"Cortanna will be fine. Believe me, I know," September replied, "but we have to worry about getting out of here." Both looked straight up at the steep tunnel to freedom.

"What now?" September groaned. Jarren stared at the problem, and then slowly smiled.

"Now," he replied, "we play Leap Frog."
