[SPOILERS] Discussion Thread for the story we're planning!

If you're not Hex or Flamarestii and don't want spoilers on our story, please don't read this thread!

Anyway, we can plan and discuss more here!

Seeing as Hex and Flamie also said they'd be interested in it, I'd love to get back into things!

I have new inspiration from diving into some Indian and South-Eastern Asian stories/research, plus I finally got a chance to play some Tears of the Kingdom and soak in some Gerudo-related lore! I completed the light temple in one sitting and loved almost every moment of it, being like OMG WE COULD USE THIS IN OUR STORYYYYY, and just generally admiring the aesthetic so much. I don't know what it is about the desert and hidden ruins steeped in a lost culture but I LIVE for this stuff. Actually, I kinda am getting idea for lots of different ruin-based places... Underwater, floating islands, jungle, underground (although that could be more general, like we mentioned having underground tunnels for the desert region and I'm just realising that apparently that is more of a thing than I initially thought it was), icy tundra (I'm thinking more of an abandoned castle/stronghold here). All fun stuff!!

yAY THIS IS BACK!! I unfortunately don't play many—ok probably any lol—video games, but that all sounds super cool... I think before we get lost in awesome yet unachievable nebulous fantasies we should figure out what we're trying to do—story? just build a world? nerd out about cool ruins and archaic languages? I'm cool with anything :D

That is a really good point -- What exactly do we want out of this?

My original vision was to co-write a quick story, but I feel like that has changed a lot, lol. Honestly, I would still love to piece together a narrative set in this wonderful world of ours, but my favourite part about this is just building said world, and filling it in with culture. I'm fine if it never becomes anything more than a fantasy land we have fun creating.

Thanks for asking the important questions, Hex! And oh my goodness I missed you guys so much, it feels great to be back on this project. :)

I totally understand tho if y'all are busy, I'm also struggling to find free time—so this doesn't have to be a huge committment but y'all seem to want to look back at this so maybe we should try :)

Yeah, that sounds great 'cause I actually don't have so much free time either lol. I would love to take baby steps forward with this whole idea tho!

Hello peoples, I am here finally! I'm also very busy, but yes we can do this!!

Maybe we should start with re-capping where we were at with everything so far, and then seeing what ideas we have to continue that? Idk if we have time to read through all the pages of history though :/

The muse will come. It's just elusive, as muses tend to be.

Oh. Gosh. I totally forgot about this! I really only have time to check puddings place. And sometimes inkwell but rarely down to earth... What's been happening lately?

Not much, lol

Honestly, we've only really been discussing how to get this project back up and running, and what direction we want to eventually take it in.

OMG MATESSSSSS

So I found a couple Vox documentary-style videos about intriguing situations in Africa. It just gets me so excited for some reason??? Like the narrator mentioned tombs and that had me SOLD-

One was about a remote crater-mountain in Madagascar (it reminded me of the Sheikah from Zelda in BoTW/ToTK) and brought back that idea of an incredibly isolated village sitting in the caldera of a steep, remote mountain range. Idk why, but that really sparked a lot of interest in me. They are a farming/mostly agricultural group, only established in the crater since 2008 I believe, and moved there (where they are an ethnic minority) in search of enough space for farming (the section of Madagascar they were from was very overcrowded), and the soil there is actually really fertile thanks to the unique type of (now dormant) volcano that they sit in.

There was another cool one in Algeria, where there's apparently a string of large circles/formations resembling craters in the middle of the desert, visible by satellite. There were a bunch of theories about what they were, from some kind of tomb, to these cool foggara (a type of qanat, which is a clever method of transporting water in these desert-areas), to excavating/extraction of natural resources. I won't spoil the findings here, but please do try to look into awesome stuff like this if you find it interesting!

Please speak freely or comment with any thoughts, ideas or opinions, no matter how small or seemingly silly! I love hearing what you brilliant people have to say, and I'm really glad we're all still interested in this project, even if we don't have the clearest or grandest of objectives, lol

I love these ideas so much :DD the foggaras especially sounds super cool!! I definitely did not spend like an hour just now getting stuck in various research rabbit holes instead of doing my essay... lol oops~ But honestly, if this thread just became a random thoughts worldbuilding place that'd be super fun!

Jay's talk of caves also got me thinking about something I researched recently that's pretty unrelated but still very cool—did y'all know that for a long time people thought the Roman empire collapsed due to lead poisoning? Ancient Romans sweetened their food with syrup made in lead pots—meaning the syrups had approx 240-1000 mg of lead per liter of syrup. One teaspoon of that would be enough to cause chronic lead poisoning. Later there was a dig where Roman-era skeleton's thigh bones were found to have 26.5 g average of lead, while skeletons from other eras + areas contained anywhere from 0.3-2.9 grams of lead.

...so basically all these people agreed that the majority of the Roman empire likely suffered from lead poisoning. But the theory's been disproven due to the fact that chronic lead poisoning alone wouldn't have been enough to explain the erratic behavior of some of the later emperors and cause the downfall of the Roman empire :D

aaaaaand that makes me think of all the ridiculous Latin scientific names we have?? Like you've probably heard this but Tyrannosaurus rex translates quite literally to "tyrant lizard king" but I doubt you've heard of Lactococcus lactis, a kind of bacteria that basically means "milk berry milk". And then you have all the ones people named after strange things—like the beetle Ba humbugi which was apparently named after Scrooge from Dickens' A Christmas Carol?? And the genus of flies Pieza, in which belong Pieza kake, Pieza pi, and Pieza rhea. Very scientific~

I'm not totally sure why I'm telling y'all this other than the fact that it's cool :P I'm sorry if it's super long and weird but I enjoyed it so maybe y'all will too? I can always hope :)

submitted by Hex, research rabbit holes! :D

Literally, hyperfixating on these kinds of things is my strong suit! The lead poisoning and Latin tidbits Hex mentioned are fascinating as well! Thanks for sharing~

Kinda random but I've read a lot of Chinese novels/manhua, and a few Korean ones where poisoning is a big plot point. Those ones are always so interesting. I initially got into that kind of thing because of the "genius doctor" archetype, where they basically go around solving a bunch of issues for people and picking up clues as they go, which eventually builds up to some big (usually very high stakes) mystery/conflict. Then I started reading a bunch of palace dramas. I still usually prefer the doctor ones I think, but sometimes the palace dramas have enough intrigue and interesting poison-related shenanigans to be worth it. There's also a lot of ickier personal drama that I find difficult to enjoy though, I prefer to stick with the political intrigue and scheming rather than the cattier stuff that usually happens...

Ok so I've been checking out other political situations too, to gather some ideas. It's a bit tough for me (mostly in a good, challenging way) because I get really upset when I see such obvious unfairness and, ugh... it's just so frustrating, and I can't help but get really invested and upset on the behalf of those struggling.

One of the situations I'd suggest looking into is Haiti. I personally have a particularly strong connection to this one because I've gone there many times (probably most frequently, with the exception of maybe Niceragua) to help with infrastructure and long-term development to help the people living there. Most of my life I've spent there I was technically working as a missionary, but I do want to make it clear that despite heavy influence from a protestant-Jewish mixed upbringing I no longer practice any form of religion, nor do I endorse some the their actions. I've honestly always struggled with religion, and despite this, I often participated in missionary work specifically when it was less overtly "here, this is your lord and saviour, take it or be smitten" and more focused on making fairly worldly, positive effect on the people living there. (For instance, digging wells, helping out with construction after storms/hurricanes, inserting water-purifying devices, etc.).

Another big one that's been on my periphery is the whole Hong Kong situation. I'll probably elaborate on this one later, but do notice the common theme of those gosh darn colonists destroying local... everything, really, and then leaving behind a goopy trail of ongoing issues even when independence is reached. Oh my goodness, it never turns out well, does it?! Potential material to work with there. Interesting how it has been tied to China and Britain without really belonging or identifying fully with either. It reminds me of that one city in Avatar: the Last Airbender that's all mixed and has a bunch of different nationalities... Never actually seen it, but I've heard it's a great show, and listening to my friends go on and on about the lore makes it look like yet another interesting potential pool for us to draw from~

Okay and then obviously The Russo-Ukraine war is on-going, and maybe a future area can be based on that build-up to history, but I prefer to draw on less Euro-centric places for now. Lemme know if y'all want to do it differently, just a personal restriction so I don't fall back on the familiar while we're exploring. So much of "history" has already been defined by Euro-centric-ness, so I want to get a look at some other cultures before I return to what I already know oh-so well.

Anywayyyy. Yeah, that's all for right now. I'll probably pop in again real soon with more ideas. (Also my dog just escaped and its dark out and I had to chase her down through a bunch of brush and woods and she likes to chase cars so I was scared she would find the closest road and get hit, especially since it is so dark and she'll cut right in front of them because of her herding instict- Yeah, anyway, I caught her and she's fine (needs a bath, but safe), but I'm still a little flustered so I'll get back to this when my mind is a bit clearer) *frazzled laughter*

Hm, so I've been thinking about the creation myth again. If you think about it, isn't water all around earth and sky all around water? Maybe that could play into the story; like Earth really wants to be on top, but is the smallest, while Water doesn't mind either way and Air actually wishes it weren't on top? Or like consider that they might believe in different layers of being; like with earth being one, above the earth but between the earth and sky another one, the in/above sky a seperate one, under the earth one, the water that they think the earth floats on being yet another one and maybe the top-water being one? Idk, I just had this idea and thought it sounded interesting.

So have you all seen my new story? The one in Merouge? I was thinking of tying in that story to this world, if you all think that's alright. It means we'll have more world altogether, and a whole lot of interesting things can come up, which gets me really excited! If you are all fine with that, but don't want to directly cross over, we can always just leave 'easter eggs'/references or have it take place far in the past/future from that story. Just food for thought. I'd love to know your opinions, and it's totally ok to say you don't want them merged together, if that's how you truly feel
