Emilie and Jessica!

Emilie and Jessica! All right, if no one else will make us a thread I will. So... What do you want this to be about? I was thinking fantasy, as long as we don't have any "fractured fairy-tales." I mean, they're great, but for all the eliminating of cliches, they're becoming cliche.

The wolf stepped backwards a short ways, but its posture was not defensive or frightened, merely alert. It seemed to be looking Laran right in the eye.

I think we should follow it, she decided.

You're crazy! Declared Skyonso. That thing is a wolf. Wolves kill deer.

The gray animal cocked its head and raised a paw as if to start walking again.

But we need to follow it, Laran insisted. Look at it. It wants us to come.

Laran. Matria's thought cut in.  I'm sorry, but I have to agree with Skyonso. We can't afford to take chances, like trusting wolves.

The two deer started walking again, across the plain toward the fuzzy green treeline in the north. The moon was low in the sky and there was no point in going back to sleep, it would soon be morning. Laran didn't want to follow them, but she had no choice. She looked back at the wolf once more. Its ears and tail were low, and before it slunk away it uttered a long, mournful howl.

Laran was miserable for the rest of the morning. It was noon before they stopped.

What's got into you? Skyonso asked her. You're not still dwelling on that wolf, are you?

Laran nodded glumly. It's just...I feel like she really wanted our help, and we let her down. Maybe we didn't understand what she wanted, but I still think we could have trusted her.

Matria, who had been grazing, jerked her head up. Pups, she said abruptly.

What? Laran and Skyonso said at the same time.

Pups, Matria said, urgently. Don't you get it? She has pups, but something's wrong with them. She needed our help. Didn't you see how thin she was? The puppies are starving. That's why she wanted us to help her.

We HAVE to go back! Laran yelled inside her head. We can't just do nothing.

You're both crazy, Skyonso sighed. All right, I'll come, but only to save you from the wolf, understood?

It should be about pirates. The perfect combination for me would be Pirates, Orphans, Wizards and talking animals.

@Liz: Well, um, neither one of us really likes pirates (I assume here, Emilie, because you've never actually mentioned liking pirates, but correct me if I am wrong), but we like magic and stuff, so we didn't write about pirates. I don't see why it should be about pirates, when we're doing so well with what we have.

Andy P. C. says pitp. I think he's talking about pirates, I don't think he likes them too much. See? He agrees!

Um... what? Can we just have this be the author pairs movement, please? I'd rather not have any more people join.

@Emilie: I quite agree. So, shall we continue?

There's just one problem with your post. A starving wolf, especially with pups to feed, would be desperate, and likely to try to bring down anything it could, even a deer. To follow the wolf would be really dangerous for them, and it would be difficult to keep the wolf as a "good guy".

Hm...you're right about that. Although, if she did attempt to kill them, she wouldn't be responsible for her actions. ;)

What if the wolf is actually a shapeshifter? And she's letting her wolf instincts take over, but right before she pounces on them, she transforms into a human, and then she explains that her children are shapeshifters too, but since she was a wolf when she had them, they stay as wolves until they are old enough to learn how to shapeshift. Does that make sense?

Ah. Under the extreme conditions, it is difficult for her not to revert to wolf instincts. Makes sense.

***************

Laran rode Skyonso back to the tree. He still thought it wasn't a good idea to try to find the wolf again, but he said he shouldn't leave her to go alone if it was dangerous. So Laran walked in a wide circle around the tree with Skyonso following a short distance behind her. Matria stayed at the tree. Laran scouted in all directions, calling, "Yoohoo! We're here now!" She felt silly, but she had to alert the animal to her presence somehow. Suddenly the thin gray body of the wolf emerged from a small hollow in the grass about ten paces ahead of her. It's den, she reallized, must be dug into the side of the hollow that she couldn't see. It looked at her and whined. She moved toward it. Suddenly its ears shot up and it growled. Laran ran backwards a few paces, confused. But suddenly the animal shook its head, fear in its eyes. It looked at her pleadingly.

Moment of randomness: You live in Washington? That's cool. I was born in Washington. :)

********************************************************************

Laran took a deep breath and followed her into the den. Inside, she found three cubs, thin and weak. All of a sudden she heard a growl behind her. Twisting in the narrow passage, she saw the wolf's hackles rising and her muscles preparing to pounce.

Laran tried to scream, but nothing came out, and her mind was panicking too much to thinkspeak. Just before the wolf pounced, however, it began to change.

Its body lengthened in the narrow passage, Its claws dissapeared, and its fur swished about its knees. Its muzzle shrank and dissapeared, and it ears gre smaller whilst its head hair grew longer. A lady was kneeling in the tunnel. She was wearing a ragged knee-length gray silken dress, and her hair was long and silvery-gray. She opened her mouth, and Laran could see her teeth were small, white, and pointed.

"Help me," she whispered.

Laran was too shocked to say anything for a minute or two. When she opened her mouth, the question came out in a cracked whisper. "Who are you?"

"Amardria (Ah-MAR-dree-uh) the shapeshifter. Can you help me? My children are starving."

Laran? Skyonso's voice, concerned inside her head. Are you alright?

I'm fine, Skyonso, she replied. It'll take too long to explain everything. Just wait for a while, all right?

She ignored his No, it isn't alright, and nodded to Amardria. "I can help. I have food."

Amardria went weak with relief. "Thank you. You don't know how much this means to me." (Sorry if my long and difficult to pronouce names are starting to bug you. Matria, in case you didn't know, is pronounced Mah-tree-ah. Laran is Luh-ran. I'm including a pronounciation guide in my first novel, because the names...*sighs*)

Laran went further inward to the puppies and gently picked one up. It tried to bite her, but Amardria growled, and it subsided. She shrugged off her pack and reached into it with one hand, pulling out roots, berries, and plants. After feeding it and its siblings, she turned to leave but was stopped by Amardria.

"Take them with you."

Yes, I can pronounce your names, it 's just the only one I thought was different was Laran. Can it be, "Lair-an"?

Sorry I don't have time to write more, my sister is telling me to get off the computer.

"Take them?" Laran was stunned. "I don't know how to take care of wolf cubs. And you're their mother..."

"There's not enough food," said Amardria. "We're starving. I scarcely have enough food to feed my cubs, let alone myself. And if I can't feed myself, I start reverting to my wolf instincts. I can't keep control of myself. I might have killed you, and still might. You need to leave quickly, and take the cubs with you."

Laran looked at the squirming litter of three gray pups. "Do they shapeshift?" she asked.

"No," answered Amardria. "They were born when I was a wolf, and their father was wild. Perhaps some of them may learn to shapeshift when they are older, but for now there is no chance of it."

Sure it can be Lair-an. Ironic-the only one I thought was so blindingly obvious as to how to pronounce it was the only one you thought was different. :)

****************************************************************

Laran took a deep breath and said, "Give me a moment or two." She thoughtspoke to Skyonso and told him everything. Then she waited for his reply. It wasn't terribly surprising.

No! Absolutely not, no, never in a million years! Don't you DARE take those pups! Are you out of your mind?!

But they need help, Laran insisted.

We GAVE them help. We gave them all the help we could. We can't take them with us! It's out of the question.

Take who with us? Matria. Laran was hopeful for a minute, then her heart sank. Matria was unlikely to agree with her. She was a deer, after all. She would side with Skyonso, definitely.

Skyonso explained.

Matria was silent for a while, then said, Are they young pups?

Yes, said Laran, her hopes rising again.

How young?

Um..."How old are they, Amardria?"

"Eight weeks," the shapeshifter answered.

Eight weeks, Laran repeated.

That's barely weaned, Skyonso. They won't be of any harm.

They won't be of any use, either, the stag grumbled. Alright, fine, they can come. Females...He subsided into an angry silence.

"I'll take them," Laran said.

"Thank you," said Amardria, looking relieved. "I will find you when I can take them back."

"Alright," replied Laran. "What are their names?"

Since you hardly ever get to do any names you can take it from here. :)
