Emilie and Jessica!

Emilie and Jessica! All right, if no one else will make us a thread I will. So... What do you want this to be about? I was thinking fantasy, as long as we don't have any "fractured fairy-tales." I mean, they're great, but for all the eliminating of cliches, they're becoming cliche.

"Their names are Patella, Cronus, and Isha," replied Amardria. "When you reach the Great Forest, my husband will meet you. He can thoughtspeak. Give him the pups."

"I will," promised Laran.

"Thank you," said Amardria gratefully.

And with that they set off, Laran walking beside Skyonso and Matria with the pups in her shawl.

I will write more, my turn isn't over, I just don't have time to finish...

At noon they came over a gentle rise and saw before them the vast, treeline of the Great Forest. It was a dark strip not far off, and it curved away to the west and faded in billiowing fog far to the east. As they approached the trees the pups began to mewl and tumble in her shawl. She let them lick water off her finger to calm them down. And then before long, they were in the shade, under the boughs of the trees. Matria turned to them.

Have I mentioned that you are an AWESOME writer? The description...I felt like I was there. I'm good with dialogue, and I like to think that my descriptions aren't bad, but you...*is at a loss for words*

************************************************************************************

Well, said Matria, they aren't bad pups. And soon we'll be giving them to their father. This went better than I thought it would.

It will have gone even better when we get away from these pups and their father, Skyonso cut in sullenly.

Oh, be quiet, Skyonso, Laran told him. What did the pups ever do to you?

They were born wolves, came the annoyed reply.

Be quiet, you two, Matria said sharply.

At first Laran thought that Matria was just annoyed at their squabbling. Then she realized she could hear a rustling in the bushes that wasn't caused by the breeze.

She jerked her head towards the sound and sat frozen, with the puppies whimpering on her lap. Then out stepped the most powerful-looking wolf she had ever seen.

He was HUGE. Had he stood on a hill he would have blotted out the sun. He had poweful muscles that were bunched under his midnigt fur, and he was snarling, exposing sharp, dangerous white fangs.

Give me my pups, human, he growled inside her head, or I will rip you to shreds.

*blushes* Thanks... Although really, there are people on here better than me. Look at: http://www.cricketmagkids.com/chatterbox/inkwell/node/4483. This is the best writing I have seen on the Chatterbox; it blows me away. But anyway, the next part:

********************************

Laran hurriedly laid the pups on the ground and stepped back. They wagged their tails furiously and squirmed toward their father.

I was sent with the pups by Amardria, Laran ventured. She was unable to find food for them on the prairie, and wanted you to have them.

The huge wolf gently picked up the pups and placed them behind him. Then he turned to Laran with a quizzical expression. Amardria?

Yes, she replied, your wife.

You have spoken with my wife... she gave you the pups to take to me... If she trusted you with her pups then I am willing to. But I never knew her name before. It is a lovely name. Then he added quickly to explain himself, she cannot thoughtspeak. And I do not understand human languages.

The thought was amazing to Laran. They were married, and yet they had never spoken.

Matria's voice came from behind her. Laran, if you are ready, I must be returning to my forest at Mount Tenjo. I have accompanied you thus far, and should be returning now.

Erm, Laran thought. Something was so comforting about having Matria with her and Skyonso that she could hardly bear to be letting her leave. But at the same time, Matria had only promised to come this far, and it would be unfair to force her to come with them. Yes, Matria, she said. I'm ready.

Good, Matria answered her. Then she walked forward and touched noses with Skyonso gently. Farewell, my son, and beware the Roc bird. Then she began to walk away.

What's the-Skyonso began, but Matria was already gone.

Laran turned to the powerful black wolf. Goodbye...

Faranso, the wolf replied. Good hunting.

It took Laran a minute or two to realize that this was a parting expression used by wolves, probably considered very polite. Good hunting, she replied, then looked pointedly at Skyonso.

Good hunting, the stag muttered grumpily.

Faranso seemed satisfied and walked away with his pups.

****************************************************************

I read the story and...wow. *is blown away* You're right. That is the best writing I've ever seen on the Chatterbox. Oh, by the way, do you know what a Roc bird is? If you don't, it's a huge golden bird that can carry off full-grown elephants. It lives in the mountains. And Happy Easter! :)

Andy P. C. says eogc. I think he's talking about egg hunting.

Through the afternoon they walked through the forest. When the trees were close together it was dark, and they feared it would be hard to keep their direction, but now and then they came to a small clearing where they could tell the direction of the sun and continue. There was almost no sign of human occupation in the forest, and it seemed they were quite safe. Skyonso carried Laran for a while. When it was time for supper they stopped, and she opened the sack full of food. But it was no longer full, she realized. There might be enough for one more day. She ate sparingly while Skyonso grazed, then she tried to find berries to store for the journey. As she was making her way around a blackberry tangle, she saw before her a tree trunk of extraordinary size. Skyonso, Matria, and herself, plus a few men could have hidden comfortably behind it. She edged her way around it, and as she rounded the far side she came across some boards, nailed horizontally into the tree, one over another to form a ladder.

Laran? Skyonso asked, sounding concerned. Where are you?

Over here, she answered. Come see this.

Skyonso came around the tree and looked at the ladder in surprise. Then he snorted in fear and moved away. Come on, Laran, he said. We have to leave.

Why? Laran said, nervously. What's wrong?

I don't know. There's just something--

He never finished his sentence, for at that moment a rope fell around his neck and he was being pulled backwards toward the tree.

Andy P. C. says mwze. It sounds like Mewzie. Good name for a kitten. Andy, do you have a kitten?

Laran grabbed the rope and pulled on it with all her strength, hollering as she did so.

She hadn't expected to make any headway against whoever was pulling Skyonso in, but surprisingly the rope began to move backwards. High in the tree, past the leafy branches which obscured the higher levels of the tree from veiw, there came a child's voice. "Oh! I'm sorry!" The rope went slack. "Are you all right?" Down out of the tree climbed a boy. He was small and dirty, and looked about two years younger than Laran. His clothes were tattered, and his hair was messy. He looked positively wild.

Laran was so annoyed at him that for a moment she didn't answer. Then she said, "I am, but I don't think he is."

"Oh, yes," the boy said, looking genuinely sorry. "Well. I didn't know he wasn't alone. He's your stag?"

"He's nobody's stag!" Laran barked. "He's...we're...traveling. Together. As equals."

The boy looked incredulous, then shrugged and held out a hand. "I'm Karreth. And you are...?"

"L-Laran," she told him, taking the hand he offered and shaking it. Maybe she shouldn't have told him her real name, but it was too late now.

"Pleased to meet you," he said. "And what's his name?"

Skyonso, the stag replied, before she could answer. I wish I could say that I am happy to meet you, but after the undignified treatment I just received, I can't.

Oh, I'm sorry, Karreth thoughtspoke. It's just...I'm fond of animals, and I couldn't help myself.

Andy P. C. says wton. Maybe I should have named the boy Woton, but I think NDT came up with that name...he's my little brother, in case you didn't know. Maybe you've seen his Story of Genak?

Please, Skyonso, said Laran, please make a serious attempt not to be hostile this time.

Skyonso seemed a bit embarrased. Laran turned to the boy.

"How do you happen to be out by yourself so far in the forest? Do you have parents?"

"I could ask the same about you," retorted Karreth.

Laran sighed. "We're just passing through. I have no parents."

"Oh," Karreth replied. "Neither do I. I live out here, up in this tree." He brightened up somewhat. "Do you want to see my treehouse?"

Laran looked up. She couldn't see anything in the tree, but that ladder went somewhere. To go up she'd have to leave Skyonso on the ground. He wants to show me his treehouse. Are you okay down here for a few minutes?

The stag nodded. I would like some time alone.

So hand over hand, behind Karreth, Laran ascended into the tree.

Sorry, sorry, sorry! I haven't been on in ages, I'm sorry. :(

Oh, by the way, I saw your post about animals, and I completely agree with you on the subject of animal souls. Of COURSE they have souls!

********************************************************************

When she entered the treehouse, all she could do was stare around in amazement.

True, the furniture wasn't much to look at-a table, two chairs, a bed, a smaller table, a chest-but the fact remained that the treehouse was wonderful.

First of all, it was very colorful. At least, that was Laran's immediate impression, until she realized that the colors were bright paintings hung on the walls. Flowers, animals, forests. Her favorite was one of a beautiful bright blue lake. "Does that really exist?" she asked, pointing to it.

The boy looked at her for a minute or two, then said, slyly, "Maybe."

And then there were animals. Everywhere. Squirrels hanging from the ceiling, ravens, hawks, and other birds flying about the place, cats, rabbits...

"And they all live with you, happily, just like that?"

"Yes."

Just two things before I post: One, how did rabbits get into a tree house? And two, yes!! There is indeed a lake in the Land of Chary, Laynie Lake. However it is just a little too far northwest for them to come into contact with. But it does exist! Yayness! ^-^

Yay! I guessed! I like lakes (say that five times fast), so I just made up a lake.

Oh, and about the rabbits...he carried them in on his back. The reason he couldn't get a deer inside is because deer can't go up a ladder and he can't carry them. He could if they were a fawn, but how would he get them back down again?

When Skyonso assured her that he would be fine below in the forest ("How do you think I survived before I met you?"), Laran spent most of the day in the tree house, as well as the night. She spent much time talking to Karreth and learned that he was an orphan. He didn't want to be sent to an orphanage when his parents died so he ran away to the forest. His father had been a woodsman and showed him how to survive in the wild. So he lived here all by himself. "But," he said, "I didn't build the treehouse. I found it, and added some improvements of my own. That includes the ladder." He looked proudly at Laran.

"Wow," Laran said. "You really did a lot of work. I wish I could live in a treehouse in the forest."

"Where do you live?" Karreth asked curiously.

"I live in the castle as one of the kitchen servants. Or I did. I'm heading to the town to find work. Do you want to live in the town?"

"No," said Karreth. "I like the woods. I don't like being boxed in and crowded with lots of other people."

Laran thought about that.
