Emilie and Jessica!

Emilie and Jessica! All right, if no one else will make us a thread I will. So... What do you want this to be about? I was thinking fantasy, as long as we don't have any "fractured fairy-tales." I mean, they're great, but for all the eliminating of cliches, they're becoming cliche.

She also thought about what he had said about the treehouse having no ladder when he found it. How could the previous occupant have gotten up without a ladder? And who was the previous occupant? She supposed there was no way to find out.

She walked along the walls of the treehouse, examining the pictures. As she stopped by a painting of a countryside estate, one of the squirrels ran along a roof beam, chattering. As it neared her, it spoke to her softly in thoughtpeak. Its voice echoed in her mind: Laran, there is something you do not know. Be gentle with Karreth and treat him as a brother. He hold something powerful...

At first she was only surprised that the squirrel had spoken to her, that she could speak with so many animals now as she couldn't before. But then the words sunk in. She called in her mind for the squirrel, asking it to come back and tell it's name, but only Karreth answered her. "Laran, the squirrel's name is Rejoki. He doesn't thoughtspeak much, if you're trying to talk to him."

Yes! Ideas, and perhaps a point to this story!  I think things are starting to come together. How shall I explain... These pictures (some of them) were painted perhaps by a previous someone perhaps known as Matilda. Karreth comes from somewhere else, that is... well time to let the cat out of the bag, I will explain... in a seperate post.

All of this stuff is open to revision. But here we go:

Karreth comes from our world, and Laran too. The picture on the treehouse wall of the old house is a picture of a special kind: if you are wearing one of the things known as Mathilda's rings you will be able to pass through it into where it is a picture of.

One time I had a first chapter or two that had to do with this world. It began in our world, and there was a girl who was staying with her old aunt in a house in the country. In the kitchen was a large painting, like a map, with intricate details showing the Land of Chary. In my story she found a ring in an old jewelery-box, and when she was wearing it she touched the painting and vanished into it.

Also, her great-grandmother was named Mathilda. I just reallised all this stuff could be of use planning this story.

More on this later.

Wow, this is...interesting. Good ideas. I'm a bit confused. Um, so, do you want me to keep writing?

You can pick up where I left off, we don't have to bring in that stuff for a while. But: ok my idea was that Laran and Karreth are brother and sister. Also if this will help you, Karreth has one of the rings.

Oooh, I like...brother and sister? How about twins? To make it even better. ;)

Laran began thinking hard about what the squrriel had said. Should she talk with Skyonso? No. He was too cautious. He'd urge her away, and somehow that was the last thing she wanted to do. She felt a special kinship with Karreth, almost as if she had known him for years. It was strange, but he was very familiar to her.

At last she decided to go to sleep and decide what to do in the morning.

((Ok, dream time...))

"Karreth! Laran!"

Who was that? It was difficult to tell. There was just the sound of crying and the scent of hot choking smoke. What was going on?

She felt herself being tossed off of a high-something. What it was she had no idea. Someone was falling beside her. Then she heard screaming.

She jolted awake, covered in sweat. For a moment or two she still heard screaming, then she realized that it was hers. She quickly stopped.

"Are you alright?" Karreth asked.

She nodded mutely.

***********************************************************************************

OK, so, here's my explanation: Laran was dreaming about the night her parents died. Their house was on fire and they couldn't save themselves, but they managed to save Laran and Karreth. Karreth was found by a man who lived in the woods and called himself his father, and Laran was found by the orphanage, and made her way from there to the king's palace. Does that make sense?

Ok, let's figure out their background:

1. Mathilda is the original posessor of the rings and discovered Chary.

2. Melanie (and Jandika, her sister) is her great-granddaughter. They found the rings while visiting the house their ancestor once lived in, and re-discovered Chary.

3. Jandika returned to Chary some years after their adventure and married there. The ring she wore to get there remained in Chary after she died. But before that she had

4. two children, named Laran and Karreth. I have not yet figured out how they got to be in different kingdoms.

Ps. I assume that Jandika and her husband died in a housefire. But it could have been a different kind of fire. What do you think of these ideas?

At dawn the next day Laran felt they shouldn't lose any more time on their journey. After consulting briefly with Skyonso they both agreed it was time to set off again. But she remembered what the squirrel had said: Laran, there is something you do not know. Be gentle with Karreth and treat him as a brother. He holds something powerful...

She was loath to leave Karreth behind after that. But maybe he would come with them...

Oh sorry I didn't read your explanation thoroughly enough. That's a good backstory for them then.

Karreth stood at the window of his treehouse and silently watched Laran go. Then he angrily kicked a wooden chair and pounded his fists against the wall.

Just go with her, said a small voice in his head.

I can't, Karreth told it. I can't leave the animals.

We'll be all right. It was the squirrel. Go, Karreth. Go.

And Karreth went.

"Laran!" he called, racing after her. "Laran! Wait up! I'm coming with you!"

OK, semi-writer's block, so I'm going to stop here and let your writing skills take over. Sorry I took so long!

Actually, most of the time I thought I had written last, but really I hadn't. It was my turn. Don't feel bad.

Also: they can't be twins because I already mentioned that Karreth was younger than Laran.

*************************************

Laran beamed. She hadn't known how to ask him, but now everything was fixed. Well, almost everything.

Can you take one more? she asked Skyonso.

Skyonso nodded.  He's small.

Karreth clambered onto his back and they started off.

For the rest of the day they trekked through the forest. Karreth knew exactly which plants were good to eat, and at night they boiled the roots and mushrooms in a leaf to refresh their supplies. They continued on for two days, until at last they came to the north end of the Great Forest. They looked out across a wide field, dotted with a few sparse trees and broken by a clear cool stream, running east to west. On the far side of the stream they could see a handsome country estate, small in the distance, but the house and gardens looked quite large.

Argh...semi-writer's block morphing into writer's block. It's like this: Whatever I write with S-WB (semi-writer's block) tends to be second-rate. I get frustrated, make myself try harder, and get WB (writer's block) and find it impossible to do anything.

Could you continue?

No, it's not that. S-WB can attack at any time. Don't feel bad. :)

But could you continue? You must have had some idea in mind.

Only kind of. I was just moving them along towards their destination. I was also trying to bring up something to unblock you. We don't have to use the idea of the country estate at all, it just happens to be on the 4 by 2 and a half foot map of this place in the exact spot they're travelling through. So don't feel like you have to use it in the story.

Your last post hasn't shown up yet, so I'm just replying to this one. Sorry I haven't been on lately!

Now I feel like I do have to use it in the story. :S

Here we go:

Where are we, Skyonso? Laran asked.

The estate of Lord Bindrillhald, Skyonso answered, then added, a well-known animal collector.

Like Karreth? Laran wondered.

No! Karreth broke in. I am nothing like him. My animals are always well-cared for, and they are fairly common. HIS are kept in cages for most of the time, unless he wants to show them to people. And they're very rare.

Like white stags? Laran suggested.

All three looked at each other, then at the country estate.

*********************************************************************

OK, so this is my idea: Lord Bindrillhald's estate is the quickest way to the Golden Pheonix, but they have to go across without being seen. However, Lord Bindrillhald spots them sneaking across, and tries to capture Skyonso. You can take it from there.

Andy P. C. says xuag.
