Emilie and Jessica!

Emilie and Jessica! All right, if no one else will make us a thread I will. So... What do you want this to be about? I was thinking fantasy, as long as we don't have any "fractured fairy-tales." I mean, they're great, but for all the eliminating of cliches, they're becoming cliche.

They headed eastward along the edge of the forest, Skyonso stopping here and there to nibble grass. He was hesitant about going fast because all three were reluctant to reach the bridge, where they would have to cross the river into Lord Bindrillhald's lands. At noon they stopped to eat, and discussed where their journey would take them. Skyonso said that from what he had heard, they would have to cross the river upstream, travel over a corner of the estate, and then go northeast until they reached the Golden Phoenix. Its nest, he said, was situated atop a tall smooth pinnacle of rock.

Soon they began walking again, and to Skyonso's chagrin, they were not long in finding the wooden bridge. There was no one in sight on the road, and Skyonso stepped over, and quickly began at a trot across the field.

Hey guess what? I won Cricket's daring rescue story contest! FIRST PLACE! EEEEEEEEEH!

OK. I'm done inflating my head now.

Anyhoo, on with the story...

They had made it about halfway across the field when the shouting started.

"Hey! Look at that stag!" Skyonso snorted and began to canter.

"Capture it!"

Lord Brindihalldred! (Or whatever-the-heck his name is...) Skyonso cried out warningly inside of their heads.

Run, Skyonso, run, run, run! Laran and Karreth told him together.

Skyonso needed no urging. He was off and away before they had finished.

********************************************************************

I had an idea! What if they all get captured? They keep Karreth and Laran because they lie and say that Skyonso won't eat if they're not there with him--and then they discover that Lord Bindrillwhatsit--will you check what his name is before continuing?--has one of Matilda's rings!

Whatcha think?

I entered, but my word count was too long. Oops.

Anyhow, I don't think it would work to have Lord Bindrillhald (or whatever) have one of Mathilda's rings. First of all, Karreth already has one, so there's no need for them to come into posession of another. Second, I don't know how Lord B. could have gotten ahold of one anyway. But it's an interesting idea... and makes me think, it's about time for them to discover that Karreth has a gold ring. Naturally they don't realize it's special at first. But less talking and more doing... I will post more of the story shortly. I am on a school computer.

OH! IknowIknowIknow!

******************************

Three men on horses came up behind them. Two of them were carrying nets, and one of them was dressed in a red waistcoat and appeared to be a gentleman. The men with nets rode up on either side of Skyonso and the third rode behind. Skyonso struggled to go faster. Suddenly one of the men shouted back to the third man, "Lord Bindrillhald- there are two children!"

Lord B. squinted, but he couldn't see much. "Nonsense," he said. "It might as well be two bags of flour, I can't make it out. And since when does the White Stag carry children?"

One of the net-men muttered something about stags not carrying flour, either, but there was no arguing with Lord Bindrillhald.

Hurry, Skyonso, said Karreth.

I'm trying, Skyonso thought, but distractedly.

I'll put on my lucky ring, Karreth declared. He pulled from his pocket a gold ring and slipped it onto his finger.

A hedge loomed in front of them and Skyonso leaped. But the weight of Laran and Karreth bore him down, and his hind feet hit the edge of the bush. Laran cried out, she thought he would stumble, but it was worse than that. The hedge was a covering to a pitfall trap. The ground gave way and they fell into a hole.

**************************************

Okay, Lord B. has bad eyesight, but one thing that cuts through his
foggy vision is Karreth's ring. He takes it away. ("What is a peasant
boy doing with a thing lke that? Probably stole it.")

Ps. Skyonso falls and breaks his leg.

Oooh...epic. Me likes. :)

Skyonso! Laran cried. Are you all right?

I'm not...sure. My leg...it feels like it's broken.

Can you stand up? Karreth asked.

Skyonso tried, but he merely collapsed onto the ground, groaning in pain.

Oh no, Laran thought. No. No. Skyonso, I'm so sorry.

The three men rode up around the hole and dismounted. Lord B. peered down at them and Laran looked up at him angrily. "Look what you've done! Now his leg is broken! This deer belongs to us. We were riding it, and you trapped us!"

Lord B. took out a dingy glass and wiped it on his coat, then he put it to his eye. "That's better," he said. "I see you were right, Adrian. There are two peasant brats down there. Well, get them out!" He stepped back and blew his nose, exclaiming, "This cold air! I really prefer to veiw the animals from the peace of the menagerie. So let's get this prize back."

"Hold it! You can't take him away without us!" Laran said, angrily.

"And why not?" asked Lord B. (Good idea about that, BTW.)

"Because..." Laran cast around in her mind for an adequate excuse.

He won't eat without us! Karreth thoughtspoke to her.

"He won't eat without us!" Laran echoed.

"Really?" asked Lord B. "Well, if that's the case..." He turned to his men. "Pull them all out of the pit then. And be careful with the stag. He's already got a broken leg."

They managed to pull Skyonso out of the pit with ropes, then they sent the ropes back to Laran and Karreth. They pulled them out-none too gently-and then began to lead them away, back to the estate.

Okee-dokee, all yours! I liked that bit about "stags not carrying flour, either", LOL. Do you like my word, whatever-the-heck?

They were taken toward the estate. As they approached the mansion, they saw a small outlying group of buildings, and one larger decorated with vines and trellis. Several corrals surrounded it. They were taken to a smaller building with a thatch roof. "This is where the sick animals are kept," said Lord B. "Skyonso will be housed here until his leg recovers." Skyonso was lying on a sort of stretcher with his legs hanging down on either side. When they put the middle of the stretcher on a narrow table, a doctor came forward to set Skyonso's leg. The deer's eyes grew wide with fear, and he began to struggle. What are they doing?!

They're helping heal your leg, replied Laran. If these people have nothing else good in mind, they're at least trying to make you healthy. She came to stand by him and he quieted.

There was a sharp click as the doctor put the bone in place and Skyonso winced.

"There we go," said the doctor cheerfully. "Now don't let him strain that leg. Just keep him quiet and it should heal fine." Then he left.

What did he say? Skyonso wanted to know.

He wants you to stay quiet and not strain your leg, Karreth answered him.

Skyonso snorted.

Not long after, Skyonso was laid in a small pasture outside. Lord B. was surprised when they insisted on going in with him, but he complied. Just as they were passing the gate, he spied something that cut through his foggy vision like a knife. "Oh... Boy! What is your name?"

"Karreth."

"What is that on your finger, Karreth?"

"My lucky ring. It belongs to me."

"Who gave it to you?"

"My mother."

"Your mother? Is that so? Do let me see." Scruffy little beggar probably never had a mother, thought Lord Bindrillhald. And if so, she probably never had a twopence in her life. The child probably stole it. When Karreth held out his hand for Lord B. to have a look, then the latter said, "Why don't you give that to me?"

"No!" shouted Karreth. "It's mine. I said my mother gave it to me!"

But before even the first word was out of his mouth, or he had had time to react, Lord B. had snatched the ring. "I'm going to keep this for a while," he said. Then he walked out.

"No!" Laran shouted. "That's not fair! Give it back to him!"

She pounded on the gate of the corral, but it was bolted.

Karreth sat down hard on the ground, fuming. "I can't believe he did that," he snarled. "That's MY ring."

"Karreth...you didn't steal it, did you?" asked Laran, hesitantly.

Yes, that's what I would like to know, added Skyonso.

"Of course not!" Karreth snapped. "It's my ring." It's my ring, Skyonso, he added, thinktalking. And I'm going to get it back!

Days went by without Lord Bindrillhald reappearing. Laran and Karreth were only allowed to leave the pen a few times a day, and at meals their food was brought to them. Skyonso was still immobile. He did a lot of sleeping. Laran often thought about how the fence would be low enough for him to jump, if he had been able to run. Sometimes, when Laran and Karreth were bored, they would have long talks with each other, about their parents. Neither of them could remember very much, and they shared experiences.

Hey, did you just have a birthday? 'Cause I got on, and I saw your age, and it said 15. That's awesome! You're almost old enough to get a driver's liscense! ;) Tomorrow is my half birthday. Yippee! Twelve-and-a-half!

*********************************************************************

They had been there for several weeks when the doctor came back, checked Skyonso's leg, and ordered him moved to the stables. "And you two," he said. "Lord B. has told me to tell you that you are not to stay with the stag anymore. You are to work and earn your right to stay here. You will feed the animals, sweep the floors, etc." Then he left. "You take the stag to the stables," he called over his shoulder, "and you will discover a list of tasks to be carried out." He walked away.

"I don't believe it! I just don't believe it!" Laran and Karreth both said at the same time.

What? What did he say? Skyonso fretted inside their heads and snorted anxiously.

He said that you are to be moved to the stables-Laran began.

-and that we are to work and not stay with you anymore, Karreth finished.

WHAAT?! Skyonso practically screamed inside their heads. No, no, no! Stupid humans...

I don't know what we can do about it, Skyonso, Laran said, miserably. Let's go to the stables.
