Emilie and Jessica!

Emilie and Jessica! All right, if no one else will make us a thread I will. So... What do you want this to be about? I was thinking fantasy, as long as we don't have any "fractured fairy-tales." I mean, they're great, but for all the eliminating of cliches, they're becoming cliche.

When one of the stable hands came and let them out, Skyonso was still protesting. His voice bounced around inside their heads until they were far away. Laran and Karreth were put to work cleaning the horses' stables at first. When they came back from having their lunch, they discovered Skyonso was put into one of the stables. He seemed glad to be able to stand, but unhappy to be cramped in such a small space. They said hello to him briefly, but didn't want to hang around too long.

Got to go... But anyway, I think it's interesting that you're twelve, because most of my best friends seem to be twelve.

Gosh, sorry, Emily/Emilie (why do you change the spelling of your name?)! I didn't mean to stay away so long! Stuff's been happening...Anyway, more story...

One day, Karreth disappeared. Laran searched and searched for him, but couldn't find him anywhere. She discussed the problem with Skyonso, but only had a few minutes because another worker in the stable caught her with the stag and sent her off. Laran walked off, feeling glum. "Karreth!" she called, halfheartedly, her voice a little hoarse from calling all day.

Maybe he left, she thought miserably. After all, he doesn't have any reason to come with us. Maybe he wanted to go home.

No he didn't, she argued with herself. Karreth wouldn't do that. He's nice.

That doesn't stop him from wanting to leave, the pessimistic side answered. Let's face it-you'd leave, too, if you weren't traveling with Skyonso to the Golden Pheonix.

This thought was so saddening she leaned her head against a tree and just tried not to cry.

Suddenly a servant of Lord B.'s came along, grabbed her roughly by the arm, and, without a word, began to lead her away. Laran fought and tried to get away, but he just kept pulling.

"Where are you taking me?" she asked.

"The same place your theiving friend got taken," the servant replied. He gave her no further answers.

I was gone at camp for a while, so I couldn't post. But anyway, here is the next part:

*******************

The servant took Laran to Lord Bindrillhald's house. It was truly a large place, with a grand double staircase and many rooms. But they didn't go up the staircase. Instead they went below, to the wine cellars. There the servant opened the door, put Laran in, and locked it behind her.

Karreth was there, sitting on the floor. "They put you in here too?"

"What's going on?" asked Laran. "I was so worried."

"I tried to get my ring back," said Karreth. "They're keeping us here until the sherriff can arrive from the nearest town."

"But... How did it happen?" Laran asked incredulously.

"I snuck into Lord B.'s chambers and tried to steal the ring before he woke up. But he woke up and called the guards, and I got thrown in here. The wine smell is going to my head. I've been here all day, and all I've had is one measly little scrap of bread, and a couple of sips of slimy water. It's horrible. How did you get down here?" Karreth answered.

"I was looking for you," said Laran. Then she blushed. "I-I thought you'd left." Karreth stared at her/ In the gloom she couldn't read his expression. "Sorry, Karreth," she said in a small voice, and looked at the ground.

There was a long silence, then Karreth said, "It's okay. I forgive you."

"Well, look," said Laran. "We've got to get out of here. They're getting the county sherriff, and if he comes he'll take us to the city and lock us up. Then we'll stay there for a long time, and probably Skyonso will be stuck here forever and we'll never see him again."

"You're right," Karreth answered. "But if we're getting out of here I want to bring my ring. And how would we do that? And how would we bring Skyonso with us?"

"He can walk a little now," Laran told him. "The problem would be getting away fast enough."

Karreth sat down and furrowed his brow in thought.

Just then Laran reallized something. "Here we are, worrying about how we're going to avoid getting caught in our getaway, and we haven't even figured out how to get out of this room!"

"Well, there's a window up there," said Karreth. And indeed, high up on the wall was a small grimy window. When Laran got up and stood on a wine barrel, she could see that it was exactly at ground level outside.

"How do we open it, though?" Laran asked. "The wine barrels are too heavy, even if we both held them, for us to really keep them steady enough to smash open the window. And something tells me we'll only have one chance."

"So what do we do?" asked Karreth. "We can't pull it open. I know. I've tried. It's stuck."

Laran blew her brown hair out of her eyes and studied the window some more. Suddenly an idea struck her.

"Could we pry it open with something?"

"I suppose," said Karreth. "But what?"

"Well there's a broom over here..."

"Hand it up."

Laran passed the broom up to Karreth.

He turned the broom around and poked it at the window. It was long enough to reach. Then he smashed the end against the window as hard as he could. There was a smash and glass went all over the floor.

Laran stared. "I thought you were going to use leverage..."

"I had a better idea at the last minute."

"Okay then... let's go. Someone might have heard that."

They bosh pushed hard on one of the barrels until it was scooted all the way to the wall. Then, by climbing up, (and sweeping glass off the sill with the broom) they were able to get through the window and out.

"Phew," said Laran, once they were away from the wine cellars and hiding in the woods. "Okay, now we have to go get Skyonso and leave."

"Wait," said Karreth. "I'm not leaving without my ring. I'll go back and get it, then meet you at the stables with Skyonso."

"No," said Laran firmly. "We're not splitting up. Not after what happened the last time."

"But two of us together will be more noticeable than one alone-"

Suddenly someone called, "The sheriff is here!" and a man on a large black horse came thundering in.

"OK," said Laran. "We don't have much time. We'll go, get Skyonso, then we'll run. We won't go far. We'll wait until it's dark, then go back, grab your ring, and leave. Does that sound like a plan to you?"

"Sure," said Karreth. They waited until the sherriff dismounted and went into the house, then they ran across the darkening field to the pen Skyonso was kept in. They quickly climbed over the fence.

Skyonso! thought Laran.

Where have you been? he answered, lifting his head.

I'll explain later. We have to get out, the sheriff is in the house, and any moment he'll realise we're gone.

Skyonso stood up. This would have been a better thing to ask in a couple days, but I think I can manage it. I'm better than you think. Actually, I can probably jump this fence. I've just been faking a limp so they don't move me to a more secure corral.

Oh, yes! Laran thought to him. Great! Let's get out of here.

Get out of the way, said the deer, impatiently pawing the turf.

Laran and Karreth scrambled over the fence. And Skyonso dashed forward at full speed, clearing the wooden fence with a great leap.

He landed heavily, snorting as his previously broken leg touched the ground.

Are you okay? Laran and Karreth said simultaneously.

Skyonso shook his head. Fine, he said, firmly. Get on. We're leaving.

Not so fast, Laran told him. She filled him in on the plan.

Skyonso snorted and tossed his head. I think it's foolishness. But fine. We'll do it. Not that I agree with you, but...

They got on and he galloped into the forest.

They dismounted behind some trees.

You should stay here, Skyonso,  Karreth thoughtspoke. Your leg should still be rested.

Skyonso agreed.

"Do you think they're looking for us?" Laran asked.

"Probably," said Karreth.

"How are you going to get your ring? Is Lord B. wearing it?"

"I don't know. It might be on his dressing-table. That was where it was when I tried to steal it."

"Well, you could always get in through the window, and steal back that way..."

"It's worth a try."

With that they set off toward the back of the mansion.

"Blast!" said Karreth. "Someone took away the ladder I used to get up there. Now what do we do?"

Laran looked up, calculating in her head. "I wonder...if you stood on my shoulders, and I stood up as tall as I could, could you get in? For a mansion, it's not a very tall house."

Karreth looked. "I might be able to...but would you be able to hold me up?"

"It's worth a try," Laran answered, refusing to think about what might happen if she couldn't hold him.

So Karreth got up on Laran's shoulders. Her knees wobbled. "Stand still, will you?" hissed Karreth.

"Sorry," Laran gasped. "You're heavy!"

"Steady...steady...whoooooooa!"

With a very loud crash, Laran's legs gave out and she fell, with Karreth on top of her.
