*A Travel Guide to Northwest Kyngdom That is Totally Not Top Secret and Has Nothing to Do with Anything Important

So you want to take a trip to Northwest Kyngdom? Wonderful! Pack your bags, grow an extra layer of fur, and hop onto the Badger Express, the high-speed badger-drawn train that will carry you northward.

Travel tip: The Badger Express has a wonderful dining car that serves a creamy, piping-hot soup called Pinesüppe: root vegetables simmered for hours with pine needles and topped off with a rich drizzle of sap.

Once you disembark, take a moment to notice how your breath turns into an intricately-patterned fog in the air. There is a magic to northwest Kyngdom that no one can explain--almost everything here, no matter how dangerous, is aesthetically pleasing. Gaze at the fields of soft, untouched snow, the evergreens glimmering with icicles so elaborate that you would have sworn they were carved by artists, and the aurora borealis that dance through the sky like omens of a better life. This is the home of Regina, the Silver Reindeer, who is…just your average reindeer!

Travel tip: Pack light but warm! Bring lots of high-protein snacks--we recommend grubs! Regina is the guardian of Hoof!

Though Regina looks so noble so as to be unapproachable, she is actually very friendly, and loves showing newcomers around her land. She lives in a mansion (nobody said reindeer weren’t materialistic!) that she named Jökull, the Old Norse word for ice. It is a place of good cheer, where the super-sweet juice of the local Winter Black Cherry flows year-round (delicious over ice or warmed up!). Zephyra loves to spend her holidays here.

Travel tip: Examine Regina closely when she walks. Three of her feet are shod in beautiful mother-of-pearl horseshoes that glimmer when she walks, but the fourth bears only a rusty horseshoe. Look closely at that horseshoe. I think you know what it is. Don’t you?

Regina will warn you about the forest of blue juniper trees that look so appealing and smell like Christmas on a platter. This is the Decoy Forest, and its pull is strong. When you walk through it--which you should never do--you will see what you want to see. Lost loves will cry out to you from the trees. Your mother, as a teenager, may appear, begging you to be her friend. Ignore them all. Have another mug of Winter Black Cherry cider. Enjoy your stay.

Travel tip: The pull of the Decoy Forest? B.I.G. feels it, too. When Cornelia Hornshaw stares into the Forest, she sees an image of the Fourth Power. But she still doesn’t know where it’s located. She’s heading there now, though. Will anybody stop her?

I think I've missed something. What is a SOUL?

submitted by Trixie W.
(March 7, 2017 - 10:10 am)

Well, a soul for me is:

-The source of all my magic

-All souls are divided into certain traits.

-My soul is Bravery, and Alex has the same soul as me.

-We can use our souls to do different things. For example, bravery can summon fireballs and Spears, justice can summon a lot of high speed  bullet shaped projectiles, etc.

-Each soul has a special attack. These depend on the person, but most involve their soul.

-Souls can get drained by other types of souls. Humiliation and fear are two feelings that can hurt or drain a bravery soul.

Now, each soul has an opposite, stronger soul.

-But to change the very essence of your being...

-well, I'll give you time to make up your own theories.

-Souls are important! They tell you who you are, how you are...

Um, all SOULS have pretty much 3 abilities, 2 personal abilities (you for example fireballs) and a special ability, and a SOUL trait, Bravery has like a second wind, when if take a blow that would kill you, you could hurt or kill someone to achieve that second wind, Determination can time travel when death comes knocking, Patience can phase though attacks that would kill them but only if it's unavoidable and it hasn't happen within 10 min from each other. Justice can summon the "judgement realm" a void of darkness that fads when ether justice has been made or the owner dies. Kindness can heal and use aura shields. Integrity can check the morality of another person's SOUL and remove hate, perseverance can see into the future. SOUL traits are the hardest to achieve, only people with a strong SOUL can use it. there are also Love and Hate, what makes every SOUL. Love is what every SOUL starts with at birth, this usually turns into another type later but if it stays at Love they can preform a lesser form of an personal ability, so they can preform an ability from one SOUL type to the next but they Don't have a SOUL trait. Hate is the most evil, they are corrupted SOUL, people with Hate can be redeemed but only if before then they we're any SOUL type besides Love. if so then there is no hope, Hate takes over the mind, and they are able to preform deadly attacks and have 2 SOUL traits, so for power they sacrifice sanity and morality, they are emotionless.

@Alex

I love machines and fighting. Not one for making relationships, but when I do have a friend we are close. I am EXTREMELLY (I spelled that wrong XD) impatient. I don't really like people and prefer machines. Snarky under pressure.

Just a random suggestion.

You could be...

Perseverance!

'Cause don't machines take time to work? Like don't you have to test, retest, and triple-test them to work?

I dunno, sometimes machines go haywire and then you have to try and fix them one step at a time.

Ima rewrite that poem, thanks guys!

;P

It's been days here. Food appears in the ballroom three times a day, and all doors stay unlocked. I recently discovered a latrine, too. Still, no one comes. No visitors, no other guests. No Alexandria.

A few days ago, I believe I hear somethingodd, and I could smell smoke of a fire from another part of the building. Whoever made that ruckus, they haven't come for me.

One day I walked into a large room in a yet unexplored section of the castle. It's walls were beautifully decorated with intricate carvings of each of the Powers. As I walked, my feet echoed. This room had great acoustics. And in the very center sat a piano.

I fluttered over, using my wings for the first time in days. I sat on the hard piano bench and played and sang, allowing the sweet melodies of different songs I've learned over the years envelope the room. The lyrics poured from my lips, in thousands of different tongues from all over Kyngdom. Being in the Resistance makes you develope an ear for languages. I poured out all of my emotions in to that one medley of everything: fear, exhaustion, anger. Joy and love. When I finished I heard clapping from the far side of the room.

"Very good, shadow of Everywhere. I've heard of your musical talent."

I turned to the sound of these words.

I gasped.

"Mom?" The words fell out of my mouth in the form of a whisper. How could that even be possible? No. My mother died at the hands of the Brazen Inquiry Guild. She couldn't be here.

And yet here she stands.

With her long dark hair, fair skin, and dark brown eyes, I am nearly the spitting image of her. Excepting the fact that her hair is pulled back into a ponytail instead of a braid, and her eyes, hidden behind the bars of her red cats-eye glasses, are not nearly as playful as mine. She is definitely older than when I last remember; there are now streaks of gray and white in her once dark hair. But after seven years (she disappeared when I was six) that will happen to a person. And now she wears a labcoat, the pocket embroidered SOCS.

"Hello Maria," she says, "Or have you begun to go by a different name? shadow, I hear."

"Mommy? But- you died."

"Well, obviously I didn't. I am here, aren't I?"

I nod, holding back tears.

"You know," she continues, "It can be very unsettling to see your daughter's face on every wanted poster in Kyngdom and beyond. And with wings. Oh darling, where did you go wrong?"

"You abandoned me!" I say between tears, "I was left to fend for myself after father died and you left and my brother was- was changed by the BIG. And what about my little sister? I DIDN'T EVEN KNOW SHE EXHISTED! I HAD TO SELL THE HOUSE WHEN I WAS EIGHT AND SADDLE UP DIANA AND RUN TO THE HILLS. I HAD TO LIVE ON THE ROAD IN THE WOODS WHERE BANDITS PROWLED," I am definitely yelling now, but I don't care.

"I LEARNED TO SPEAK ALL THE LANGUAGES OF THE ANIMALS AND THE HUMANS AND ALL OF THE OTHERS IN BETWEEN. I LEARNED TO STEAL AND LIE AND CHEAT. AND I WAS EIGHT. AND YOU WONDER HOW I GOT THESE?"

I point at my wings, the beautiful wings that have become a blessing and a curse, a gift and a sword against my throat. The wings that are colored like a sparrow's and soft and warm as a blanket.

"I GOT THESE BECAUSE YOU WEREN'T THERE. YOU WERE NEVER, EVER THERE. YOU WEREN'T THERE WHEN I DISCOVERED MY POWERS. YOU WEREN'T THERE FOR ME WHEN I JOINED THE RESISTANCE, WHEN I DECIDED TO FIGHT CATASTROPHE. YOU WERE NEVER THERE. YOU WERE NEVER THERE TO HELP ME LIKE A MOTHER SHOULD."

I couldn't yell anymore.

"You were never, ever there."

My voice is hoarse from screaming and my eyes are red from tears. I ache all over from fear and anger and sadness. My hands are shaking.

My mother walks over the piano bench and embraces me in a big bear hug. At least her hugs have never changed.

"Mommy?" I croak, "Mommy, why are you here? Why are you working for them?"

"Because, Maria, I have been here for you. I've been Catastrophe's guide, the SOCS's guide. I helped them track you down with that fox boy, shared with them your interests and weaknesses. Told them of your never-ending kindness. I am the one that carried out the order to give your cat friend her cyborg parts. And I am the one that gave you those wings."

Your mom sounds a lot like Lycaella's mom... I would suggest that they're related, sisters or cousins perhaps, which would make shadow and Lycaella cousins, but it's entirely possible for two unrelated people to be coincidentally similar.

Maybe they're work friends? Would they be in the same field?

I don't know, maybe. The only thing I know Lycaella's mom worked on was something to do with the detached shadows (which, by the way, is still unresolved), so if that has anything to do with the study of homo avians, or if their departments are located close to each other, it's possible.
