*A Travel Guide to Northwest Kyngdom That is Totally Not Top Secret and Has Nothing to Do with Anything Important

So you want to take a trip to Northwest Kyngdom? Wonderful! Pack your bags, grow an extra layer of fur, and hop onto the Badger Express, the high-speed badger-drawn train that will carry you northward.

Travel tip: The Badger Express has a wonderful dining car that serves a creamy, piping-hot soup called Pinesüppe: root vegetables simmered for hours with pine needles and topped off with a rich drizzle of sap.

Once you disembark, take a moment to notice how your breath turns into an intricately-patterned fog in the air. There is a magic to northwest Kyngdom that no one can explain--almost everything here, no matter how dangerous, is aesthetically pleasing. Gaze at the fields of soft, untouched snow, the evergreens glimmering with icicles so elaborate that you would have sworn they were carved by artists, and the aurora borealis that dance through the sky like omens of a better life. This is the home of Regina, the Silver Reindeer, who is…just your average reindeer!

Travel tip: Pack light but warm! Bring lots of high-protein snacks--we recommend grubs! Regina is the guardian of Hoof!

Though Regina looks so noble so as to be unapproachable, she is actually very friendly, and loves showing newcomers around her land. She lives in a mansion (nobody said reindeer weren’t materialistic!) that she named Jökull, the Old Norse word for ice. It is a place of good cheer, where the super-sweet juice of the local Winter Black Cherry flows year-round (delicious over ice or warmed up!). Zephyra loves to spend her holidays here.

Travel tip: Examine Regina closely when she walks. Three of her feet are shod in beautiful mother-of-pearl horseshoes that glimmer when she walks, but the fourth bears only a rusty horseshoe. Look closely at that horseshoe. I think you know what it is. Don’t you?

Regina will warn you about the forest of blue juniper trees that look so appealing and smell like Christmas on a platter. This is the Decoy Forest, and its pull is strong. When you walk through it--which you should never do--you will see what you want to see. Lost loves will cry out to you from the trees. Your mother, as a teenager, may appear, begging you to be her friend. Ignore them all. Have another mug of Winter Black Cherry cider. Enjoy your stay.

Travel tip: The pull of the Decoy Forest? B.I.G. feels it, too. When Cornelia Hornshaw stares into the Forest, she sees an image of the Fourth Power. But she still doesn’t know where it’s located. She’s heading there now, though. Will anybody stop her?

"Goodness, are you okay? You appear to be sick?" Regina says at my dropped mouth.

"You're the co guardian." I stammer.

She laughs. "Of course, dearest. Goodness, word spreads quickly." She says.

"Regina, that on your hoof--" I stammer. She nods in a graceful dip of her neck. "Yes..." She says slowly.

"We need to talk regarding--" I stutter.

She glances at her hooves. "Of course. Come to Jokul, we'll sort this. And bring the resistance leaders, we have resistance soldiers camped out at Jokul, in wait for Catastrophe, but they know that. Goodness, you're freezing, child! I'll fetch you some Winter Black Cherry."

I think we should wait a tad for my attack. I think we need to contact some other orginazations and see if they have any information on the area we are going to fight in.

Hazel~

Anwen! Rain talks about her all the time. How did I not recognize her? I'm glad she's helping.

We exit the hotel and head to the edge of the woods to search.

The forest is dark, seeming to twist the light into grotesque figures that weave in and out of the undergrowth. Worst of all, it is silent.

"Anwen," I whisper. "Which way do you think she went?"

Anwen shrugs. "I think she probably came out for some fresh air--she doesn't like enclosed spaces very much. So, maybe over there?" She indicates a soft patch of plants at the edge of the woods. I suppose it smelled pretty fresh.

Up close, we find small footprints dotting the moss. The scene swims before my eyes, and suddenly, I look up to find Rain.

She looks at me, turns around, and bounds deeper into the Decoy Forest.

Wordlessly, I take off after her, dodging branches and bushes, calling for Rain to slow down!

I enter a clearing and Rain slides into the deep shadows. Oh no. It was a decoy.

And I left Anwen at the edge of the woods all alone!

I hear sniffling. Curiously, I follow the noise to a sheltered place a little farther into the woods. A deer--Rain--is tossing and turning in it. Is she a decoy? There's only one way to find out...

"Pssst...Rain...wake up..." I whisper, nudging her. She moans.

Then I hear another noise. Footsteps. I look up and Anwen is ploughing through the bushes, her eyes and ears covered. "Hazel, did you find her?" she asks loudly.

"Yes!" I call, being loud so she can hear me. "Well, it could be another trick. But it's at least something. We should take her to the edge...if we can find it."

Anwen only opens her eyes a slit when she gets to Rain and I. "Looks like her," she says, stroking Rain's back soothingly.

"Should we wake her up?" I ask.

Um, well I might not be up to too much fighting, but I was making these human automatons if that would help...I just have to finish the first model, then I can start production.

I am falling. I don't know where I came from, but I think I was asleep. It's cold. I can't stop myself from falling, so I stop trying. I've been falling for a long time, and eventually I fall asleep.

I wake up with a jolt. I realize that I'm three feet away from cold, hard ground and there is nothing I can do to stop myself, so I close my eyes and hope for the best. (Which would probably be breaking only an arm instead of my neck.) Then I hit the ground, and everything goes black.

Slowly, I come to. There are voices close by, and it's warm here. I can't open my eyes, but I feel like I can talk, so I give it a try. "Where I am I?" I whisper. The voices stop, and someone says, "Did she say something?"

I hear footsteps coming over to me where I'm lying on a blanket. Then the person kneels down next to me. I open my eyes, and I get a shock. "Sprocket? Where are we?"

"In an inn(Laughing) owned by badgers," I say shakily. "What in the heck are you doing here?"

That was scary. We were in the library, talking about plans, when we heard a thump from behind the bookshelves. We went to investigate and found Rae lying on the floor. Moving her to the rug by the fire, we proceeded to try to wake her up. Nothing had worked. Finally she came to.

"I have no idea," she whispered. "I was falling and falling and I couldn't stop and then I hit and blacked out. That was weird."

I laugh. "Seems like you and I have a knack for falling off things."

She gave me a quizical look, one eye partially open. "What?"

"Later," I respond with smile.

Rae, what the heck happened? Why did you fall?

We've only been here for a couple of hours, and already a bunch of new people and animals have either arrived, gone missing, or passed out. We're discussing war tactics when someone brings up where our troop supply will come from, but the meeting is cut short when more people come in. To top it off, Mina sneds us radio transmissions that she've convinced several organisations and kingdoms to join us, and a girl name Rae falls out of nowhere and blacks out. While she comes to, I talk to Shadow as she helps me catch up on everything.

"...so now the girl, Brynn, is missing, Alexandria has caught back up with Catastrophe's army, Elliot's good, and a cat diner's has opened up."

I nod and thank her for telling me everything when five people burst in through the doorway. But they're wearing uniforms that aren't ours. They're Catastrophe's people.

And the one leading them is the traitor that is my brother.

I walk through the doors of the Inn and I immediately see them. The people I left. The people who betrayed me. The Resistance.

But I also see her, the girl I've been searching for. The fire illuminates her wings beautifully and despite the fact that all I can see of her face is her silhouette, I know who she is.

She looks up at me as the Inn door slams, her eyes twinkling with a unique mix of anger and wonder

"Jake?" She says

"shadow?"

I notice someone running toward me, and without thinking, dart away into the forest. I fall asleep on a soft patch of moss, and the next thing I know, someone is tapping me on the shoulder. My eyes blink open, and I realize who it is. Hazel! Of course. I should have know before I ran into the forest. She has someone with her-Anwen? "Hazel, Anwen, is that you?" I ask groggily. "Yes! Where've you been?" Hazel replies. "We were worried the decoys distracted you!" Cries Anwen. "They did," I mumble. "I saw awful things. Things I never want to think about again." I shudder, my eyes brimming with tears. "C'mon, let's get you back to the inn."

On our way back, Anwen explains how she came here, and Moonshadow, who apparently arrived several minutes ago, has to be caught up in everything as well. I tell them about how I joined the Elites (partly because Hazel looked a bit uncomfortable, as if she were in the wrong place at the wrong time, and I want to try to include her.)  I realize that I must have seen Anwen in the hall a few times, and that's what the nagging feeling was all about. I don't mention that kart, for seems unimportant now. Until we reach the door to the inn. And now I see what the nagging feeling was all about. Catastrophe's army.

Wait...Jake is with Catastrophe? And he's my brother? I'm confused. And why is he looking for Shadow? Does she have information or something?

OUT OF CHARRIE

nope, he's not with Catastrophe and he's not your brother. He was a BIG intern that joined the Resistance as a spy, but then he went rogue because they didn't approve of some of his methods for obtaining information. He's looking for shadow because.... he might have a bit of a crush on her.

IN CHARRIE (shadow)

Jake's here? How?

Last I saw the boy, he was in a tree. Literally. How in Aerth's name did he get here? It's kinda hard to go from Bog and Burrow ruins to frozen tundra in the time he had. Than again, Jake's not the normal boy....

"shadow, thank goodness. I've been looking for you ever since the Battle of Aslahari."

"Why? Why the heck are you here, Jake? The Resistance.... They don't like you that much."

"And I don't like most of them either, but there is one person in the Resistance I do-"

He grabbed my hands in his, and I could feel my wings flutter a bit with nerves

"I like you shadow. In fact, I love you."
