Beginner Thread For New Kyngdomers or Those Who Want a Slightly More Relaxed Roleplay To Participate In

By relaxed, I really just mean a thread that doesn't directly alter the main plot.

Here's a link to Hazel's Kyngdom Academy thread, if you have any questions: http://www.cricketmagkids.com/chatterbox/inkwell/node/412799

Anyways, let's introduce a segment of story, hmm?

The Grasplands, located in Southeastern Kyngdom, were once a peaceful land, where people of all nations came to visit and enjoy the warm climate. But ever since the war, the Grasplands have been altered. And not in a good way.

Nations bordering Kyngdom began to take advantage of its weakness. They began to seep into the boundaries, seeking to take some of the land.

However, Catastrophe didn't want other nations meddling in his war. He began to bomb the area. The other nations left, leaving the Graspland to view him as their savior.

Ever since, the Nobyls (wealthy families that used to rule Kyngdom) have been replaced with Catastrophe's soldiers. He has begun to recruit people living in the Grasplands.

But he's not the only army in town.

The Resistance has been hiding in the alleyways and basements of towns in the Grasplands, seeking to recruit those who do not agree with Catastrophe's motives.

What side will you join? Or will you join any at all?

Remember, post your charrie sheet on the Who's Here? thread, which is located on the homepage.

Happy roleplaying!

Adrion K'rosi~~

"K'rosi, the pirates are here."

We're in the town of Nevaru, a medium sized town that rests on the banks of the Barrier River. This late at night, nobody is around, making it the perfect time to do a little trading with some pirates.

"Finally," I reply. "Didn't they say they'd be here earlier?"

"Perhaps there was some difficulty in dropping off the logs."

"Perhaps." The man next to me is a night elf. His name is Pollo Curuxa, I believe. A wealthy man--but all Black Skull members are wealthy.

But either way, the Thunderbird is sailing up the river, and with her, a package. Not even I know what's in it.

Aboard the Thunderbird:

Night has fallen. Crickets chirp serenely in the brush that chokes the shore, still audible over the soft creaking of the Thunderbird. Up ahead is a sorry excuse for a port whose docks shudder every time one of our waves smack their posts. Nevaru. Three blue lanterns hang from a hook, letting me know that this is my destination.

"Well, isn't this a swanky part of town," I remark a little too loudly.

"Shh," Darya scolds.

We are at the prow, surveying the dock for signs of life.

"There," she points.

The lanterns are hanging over a docking cabin. A candle burns inside, illuminating two forms.

"Beautiful! Wonderful. Alright. Let's get the goods unloaded."

"Don't get too excited," Darya warns, turning away. She signals for the crew to steer us over to the dock as silently as possible. I watch the figures inside the cabin with a scrutinizing gaze, waiting for them to emerge.

I'll try to do a post from Dar'sava's perspective soon, but for now have an Adrion post.

Adrion K'rosi~~

Curuxa and I open the door and step out on the wooden ground. The docks rock gently beneath us , the wood creaking slightly. The Thunderbird looms ominously above the small, rundown cabins.

Two pirates are waiting on the docks, looking rather unhappy to be here. The three blue lanterns swing in the salty ocean breeze, causing shadows to run back and forth over their faces.

One of the pirates produces a large package, stamped with the symbol of a skull in black ink. The others must have been confident in her abilities to mark it so obviously. Or maybe they didn't really care--everyone around here is a Catastrophe supporter, and he's our ally.

"I take it the goods were delivered successfully," I say.

"You can be assured they were," The pirate, who I assume is the captain by her clothing, replies.

"Good." I extend my hand to take the package, which she hands over.  "And the safe?"

"My crew members are fetching it right now. Wait a few moments and it'll be down here."

"Hmm," I reply. Hopefully they're careful with it. Inside are several pounds of explosives, meant to detonate the port of Nevaru. We heard word of Resistance members hiding here, and that's how we plan to deal with them. The package is a mystery--my only orders were to deliver it to Catastrophe himself.

Question: how have I managed not to respond at all for over a month when I have almost nothing to do at all with my life?

Answer: I don't know. *facepalm*

Kirah~

I protectively tuck my wings close to my body as we raise our badges for the guard to see. I shirt my weight from foot to foot as he examines them for a frighteningly long time. He finally gives us the go-ahead after making sure he was giving us palpitations. I curse him under my breath as the two of us walk, casually as you please, into the moonlit streets of Omrakh. We don't look out of place, seeing as the place is crawling with Catastrophe's minions, but every eye that cathes one of ours' feels hostile and seems to linger far too long.

My imagination. Claaws, I hate paranoia.

"So what are we looking for again?" Dar'sava asks out of the corner of his mouth. My usual flutter of annoyance at him whenever he opens his mouth dies quickly this time, though I can't say why.

"Female SOCS experiment, probably hiding somewhere weird, should answer to Mongoose," I whisper back.

"Right, I know that. I do pay attention sometimes. What I meant was, what kind of-"

I cut him off, elbowing him in the ribs. (Not quite as hard as I usually would. He should be grateful.) I look pointedly at a spot deep in the shadows, but continue walking slowly, trying hard not to look too suspicious.

Finally he sees what I was staring at- a large pair of orange eyes glowing in the dark. We look at each other and come to a silent agreement. We inconspicuously make a beeline for the space in the shadows, nodding to anyone who happens to look our way. (Or even in our general direction.)

I can't see her clearly, but our supposed hacker looks to be older than Dar'sava and I put together. She also seems to be either short or have terrible posture. (Maybe both.) The only feature I can make our clearly is her eyes.

"Mongoose?" Dar'sava asks. She nods quickly, stares at the both of us for a moment, then turns and starts walking down an alley. Dar'sava raises an eyebrow at me, to which I simply shrug and start to follow her. She stops at a large pile of discarded, half-broken things like chairs and scarves and other random things- one of many such piles in the alley. She pushes the pile away to reveal boarded-up window near the ground, presumably to a basement somewhere. She delicately removes a few of the boards, then turns to us. Then, she disappears through the gap without a word.

Dar'sava~~

Kirah looks at me and I shrug. Our only choice is to follow this mysterious, orange-eyed woman, who may or may not actually be our Mongoose. It's possible it's a trap, or its just some crazy person who happened to respond to Mongoose.

I check my pocket to make sure the ETL is still there, then follow the woman through the tiny window. I wince as I cut my shoulder on something--I think it was a wooden splinter from one of the torn-off boards. Kirah follows, somehow managing to not hurt herself.

The woman flicks on a light, letting me finally see her clearly. I now realize why she goes by Mongoose--its because she's clearly part mongoose. She's short, with slightly wrinkled skin and brown hair thats starting to grey. Her ears are furry and brown and curved. She's slender, and there's faint dark markings on skin, like barring. Her teeth are slightly pointed and she has small, flexible hands. She even has a small brown tail.

"Who are you?" She says, in a rough, croak-like voice. "Resistance told me you were coming. Said you would give fake names."

"If you want our fake names, then I'm Pitalesharo," I say.

"Ferox," Kirah says.

"Good. You are who they said would come. Now. Where is your ETL?" She reaches out her hand.

I pause for a moment, then sigh and hand it to her. Hopefully it's not a trap.

Mongoose looks it over. Her eyes narrow, and she frowns. "Who gave you this?"

"Captain R'oko did," Kirah replies.

"This ETL is rigged to explode as soon as I put it in a reciever," She says. "Has R'oko done anything suspicious lately? This looks like an assasination attempt, and I think he was the one who did it. There's a coyote fur stuck between some of the explosive components."

A realization strikes me. "That's how Catastrophe found us, at his safehouse, and how they knew we'd been at the tavern! It wasn't because they used Eniyan's tracker, because that should have been disabled by the magical reinforcements around the safehouse. It was because R'oko told them where we were!"

"And so that's why he had to run off and 'talk to the others' at the base--because he was creating the explosive," Kirah adds.

"If that's the case, then Jasper and Smoke are in danger. They went with him to deliver a decoy ETL--but he might be trying to murder them instead," I say.

Mongoose seems to think for a moment. "They were heading to Fairmeadow, correct?"

"Correct."

"There's a Catastrophe base there. He might not be bringing them there to kill them--but rather turn them in to Catastrophe. There may still be time for you to save them," Mongoose says.

~~~
Plot-twists are fun. And anyways, it would be weird for R'oko to have to ask higher-ups for permission to create an alliance with the Sanukans, seeing as it was the Resistance who originally wanted to form the alliance.
(May 10, 2020 - 3:23 pm)
Ohh, fun.
Kirah~
"Thank you," I say to Mongoose, shaking her hand. I'm still in shock about R'oko. I never doubted him for a moment! The one time I don't hold back my trust...
There's no time for that. We have to go after Jasper and Smoke.
Dar'sava thanks Mongoose, then we squeese through the boarded-up window. A few of the feathers on my wings get stuck in the splinters of the wood this time. Dar'sava swears under his breath once we're back in the alley as I move the garbage pile back over the window.
"I know," I whisper. "We better go find R'oko after we get the others. Who knows what he-"
It's my turn to swear now. "He knows I'm spying for the Resistance as a soldier! Oh, Claaws-"
I march towards the street, then remember I'm supposed to look unobtrusive, so I slow and wait for Dar'sava while internally panicking. We make a beeline for the exit, and I try very hard to look authoritative as we hand over our identifications. The guard raises an eyebrow at me, so I do the same to her. She lets us leave and we hop back into our ATV (though I make sure Dar'sava doesn't get to drive). Once we're far enough away from Omrakh, I step on it. Dar'sava gets pinned to the back of his seat.
"DO YOU KNOW WHERE YOU'RE GOING??" Dar'sava shouts over the roaring engine. I don't reply.
The sight of Fairmeadow pulls me up short. I stop, not too gently, ignoring Dar'sava as he grumlbes and gets back in the seat he got thrown out of.
"Shut up and look," I say. he does, and his jaw drops.
A few of Catastrophe's vehicles are just outside of Fairmeadow. Soldiers are at the entrance, and I can make out a catlike shadow being handled roughly by one f the soldiers- Smoke.
"We're too late for them," I say. I pause for only a few seconds before backing up and driving off in another direction, just as fast as before.
"What are you doing?" Dar'sava hisses. "We have to help them!"
"And we will, but we need R'oko first," I say through clenched teeth.
"What? No way!" Dar'sava shouts, trying to grab the steering wheel. I jerk it so that he's thrown away from me. (I was kind of hoping it would toss him out of the car too, but I guess it did its job.)
"We have to get him before he gives all that information to Catastrophe's army!" I shout.
"No, you have to save your own neck!"
I screech to a stop. The thud of his head sounds like it hurts. I don't wait for him to start moving again.
Selena Evadere~
My mind begins to wander as I take up a brisk conversation with the two young men. Their accents and posture gives away their familiarity with wealth. I wonder where they come from and what they're doing down here in the boonies. What's in the chest? Where's it going? What's it to them? These are but trivial concerns. What matters is the money!
Darya is by my side, ever watchful. My crew has just reached the top deck with the safe. They're being extremely cautious with it, thank goodness. No one can blame us for being careless. I watch the two men while Darya watches the crew.
The safe reaches the top of the gangplank, and then the girls stop.
"Alright, where's the moolah?" I demand.
"Of course. It is right in here." There's a rectangular bench with sealed sides at the edge of the dock. Closer inspection--as in, lifting up the seat part--reveals it to be a crate filled to the brim with gold ingots. "You take the crate, and we'll take the safe."
I inspect the gold, attempt to lift the crate, and weigh an ingot in my hand. Feels genuine. It all checks out.
I signal for my crew to carry the small safe the rest of the way down the gangplank. We then swap--the men grab their goods, and my crew lifts the crate of gold as one.
"Pleasure doing business with you," I tell the two men, winking and tipping my hat. Our payment has just disappeared over the top of the gangplank, and Darya and I will soon follow. "Enjoy your--whatever is in the safe."
Darya and I are just turning to board the Thunderbird when something hisses through the air, there's a shout, and the dock gives an abnormal shudder.
I don't have to guess what's happening.
We're being attacked.
----------
Alllllrighty...so a few notes. 1) There's a bomb hidden in the payment crate set to detonate ten minutes after it leaves the dock (which was just now, when it entered the ship). Destroying the pirate ship was intended to erase evidence/witnesses of the exchange, blame and frame the Resistance, and take down a supply port related to Sanukaville ten minutes down the river, where the Black Skull predicted the pirates would pass by on their way out.
But, 2) they're being ambushed right now by some Unknown Entities, so I guess we'll see where that goes.
Kimi~
"Hey, Davina, I figured out what I want to be when I grow up."
"Other than what you already are?"
"Yeah, I guess I am already technically grown up."
"What do you want to be?"
"A cook."
"You're kidding."
"Heck yeah, I'm kidding. Why would I be a cook when there's espionage, combat, arson, tracking secret agents through a small town...? The longer I'm here the more I realize that I can't go back to a normal life after everything that's happened."
"You mean being imprisoned, tortured, shot at by pirates?" Davina asks with a grin.
"Yeah. It feels like the one way I can make up for what Deeja did for us. Plus...I'm addicted to the adrenaline now."
We're on our way to see General Hvite--to give him the update on what the Resistance said while we were out, and also to hear some news he has for us. I wonder what he has to say...I hope it's something exciting.
This post also takes place before the scene bewteen Adrion and Selena.
Davina~~
The lodge looks out of place amongst the white flowers and tall grasses of the endless fields. The city we just passed through looked more natural, with its grey and off-white stone buildings and weeds growing between every crack in the pavement. A few Sanukans are outside in the late afternoon, though there is not a single Nanulian. Their kind wouldn't be able to handle the high temperatures of the Grasplands, what with their extremely thick fur and skin designed for cold temperatures. I'm surprised even Kimi is able to cope with the heat, though raccoon's fur isn't anywhere as thick as Nanulian fur.
I park the ATV a few feet away from the base of the steps leading up to the Sanukan HQ. Hviti is waiting for us at the top. His usually friendly expression has been replaced with one of sleep deprivation and worry. I begin to doubt that whatever he has to tell us is good news.
"Davina, Kimi," He greets us, putting on a warm smile despite his tired eyes. "You two came awfully quickly. Did everything go alright with the Resistance?"
"Yeah, it went fine," I reply. "Now we've just go to wait and see if their higher-ups will ever respond."
"They seemed awfully disorganized," Kimi adds. "Made me wonder if they were actually capable of taking down the Black Skull."
"Well, luckily for them, they'll have a team of well-trained, experienced Sanukan soldiers, the daughter of Victor Starr himself, and a cunning raccoon anthro to help them," Hviti said. For a moment, his smile seemed genuine. "Now come inside. We have things to discuss."
--
We sat around a wooden table, made from pine exported directly from Sanukaville, in one of the conference rooms. The room seemed to be almost painfully quiet.
"The Black Skull's activity has increased in the past few days," Hviti began. "They've become less secretive and discreet, and have begun to attack entire Sanukan-controlled ports. Typically, they've been blaming the Resistance or illegal Brazen Goo smuggling groups, and the people of the Grasplands seem to actually believe them."
"How many ports have they attacked?" Kimi asked.
"Three, all of which they succeeded in destroying any Sanukan posts or facilities. We have reason to believe they're plotting the destruction of more as we speak," Hviti replied.
"Do we know where they're going to strike next?" I asked.
"Yes," Hviti said, "Which is why I requested your presence."
Hviti pulled out a map of the Grasplands, and pointed at a small marking on the edge of the Barrier River. "The town of Spiaggia. It's ten minutes away from Nevaru, a port where some Resistance soldiers are hiding and where two suspected Black Skull members have been staying for the past week. An anonymous source informed us that the Black Skull planned to use a pirate ship filled with explosives to attack the Sanukan trading post in Spiaggia. They also said the Skull planned to detonate several bombs near the believed safehouse in Nevaru."
"An anonymous source? How did they even know all of this?" I asked.
"They claimed to be working for the Black Skull. We're unsure if we can trust them...but we also don't have many options," Hviti explained. "I need you two to find this ship, called the Thunderbird, and make sure it never makes it to Spiaggia."
Hey, can I join this? What's going on? I'm hopelessly lost XD
submitted by Valerie, Kyngdom
(June 9, 2020 - 12:29 pm)
Of course you can join! The best way to figure out what's going on would probably be to read through the thread several times, but I'll make a really quick summary to help.
Basically, we start with Ember Soleil, a Resistance member who's hiding in the Grasplands. A Homo Tenebris (type of SOCS experiment) named Eniyan is ordered by members of Catastrophe's army to take her captive. Ember goes to a local tavern, where someone named Jasper helps hide her in the basement. Eniyan goes inside. Two Resistance members, Kirah and Dar'sava, help knock Eniyan unconscious. Kirah had been posing as a member of Catastrophe's army.
With help from Jasper, they bind Eniyan's hands and head to a Resistance safehouse, run by R'oko, a coyote anthro. There, the group meets Jira, an elf and theif. They have to keep their true identities secret, as well as Eniyan, who is their prisoner. The group recieves word that the tavern Ember was hiding in got burnt to the ground.
Catastrophe's soldiers show up. They bring a hostage, a young Dolor Felis(might be a Homo Felis, can't remember) named Cadao. Dar'sava, Jasper, and R'oko are taken captive. Kirah and Ember manage to sneak away. Eniyan, who has been growing more and more disloyal, is given a task by the soldiers--to defeat Cadao. Jira goes with the soldiers as well, but she's not a prisoner since she isn't part of the Resistance, nor did she help them.
The soldiers leave. Eniyan does not hurt Cadao and instead frees him. Kirah and Ember go after the soldiers. Eniyan and Cadao show up and help them free Dar'sava, Jasper, and R'oko. Jira is angry at Kirah and the others because she thinks Catastrophe is good. She takes some of the unconscious soldiers with her and flees.
Smoke, a cat and member of the Resistance, shows up to help. A cat mutant named Griffe shows up as well, offering to help hide the Resistance members from Catastrophe. Eniyan, Cadao, and Ember decide to go with Griffe, since they are in the most danger.
Kirah, Smoke, Dar'sava, R'oko, and Jasper head to a secret Resistance base. Kimi and Davina, who are working for the Sanukan Army, show up. They explain that Sanukans in the Grasplands have been being attacked by the Black Skull. The Black Skull had fled to the Grasplands after they were mostly defeated, where they recruited new members and began to rebuild.
Kimi and Davina say that Sanukaville has agreed to an alliance with the Resistance. R'oko says they will relay the message to higher-ups. Kimi and Davina leave, heading back to the Grasplands Sanukan HQ.
R'oko says they need to use ETLs (electronically transmitted letters) to contact the Resistance higher-ups. He makes two--one is a decoy, and the other is real. Dar'sava and Kirah take the real one, while R'oko, Smoke, and Jasper take the fake one.
Dar'sava and Kirah present the ETL to Mongoose, a fellow Resistance member who has the machines required to send an ETL. Mongoose informs them that the ETL is actually rigged to explode, and that R'oko must have been working for Catastrophe. Dar'sava and Kirah set out to confront R'oko.
Kimi and Davina arrive back at the Sanukan base, where General Hviti tells them that Black Skull members have been destroying Sanukan ports. He says that they've received an anonymous tip saying the Black Skull planned to attack the town of Spiaggia next.
Adrion K'rosi, a Black Skull member, meets with Selena Evadere, a pirate who has been transporting goods for the Black Skull. He hides bombs in her money. Selena had been planning to stop at Spiaggia--the place the Black Skull wanted to destroy. But before Selena can get there, Kimi and Davina attack her ship.
That was probably confusing and long, but that's the general idea of what's been going on. I probably missed a few things, but oh well.
okay-that was good. very nice summarizing, Sybill!
i would like to particpate-but not with Ashya. Ill make a new charrie i guess.
Zanrii (Zan) is an elf who takes up odd jobs, but he cant find one, so he resorted to stealing. Zan is running from someone/something when he spots the ship being attacked by Kimi and Davina.
<3 <3 <3
~Zanrii~
Zan ducked behind a discarded barell. He panted for a good half minute then popped up and started running again. Rather dangerous, but he had to get-where am I going exactly? Zan was distracted from his thoughts by a loud CRACK behind him, and started running faster. The beast thing had been chasing him since Zan had left the marketplace. He had lost the bread within ten minuted of the chase, but he kept going-Zan didnt want to die today. Actually, he didnt want to die ever. Carefully, he scrambled up the closest tree and waited for the beast to come right under him. When it did, he almost fell out of the tree-the beast was terryfying, a hulking black wolf three times the size of a bear. He waited a second, then jumped out of the tree onto the beast's back. With a harsh growl/howling sound, the beast started running, trying to shake Zan off-but he had experience riding winged horses. Zan clapped his heels, clad in thick boots, against the beast's side. With a burst of speed, they rocketed toward a looming shape in the distance. when they got closer, Zan realized it was a ship. Wait what? A ship?  then something exploded in the distance. Zan leapt off the beast's back while it was distracted and ran toward the ship. A howl behind him told Zan the beast was back on his tail... not good. And so Zan sprinted toward the ship, getting chased by a heaving black wolf.
-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-
which is pretty ridiculous to me.
welp. Kyngdom is so FLIPPING complicated, but ill try and keep up lol
and randomly-Zan has dark green hair, pointy ears, a dirty grey tunic and baggy white pants that are even dirtier, and thick brown boots. one bright green eye, one dark (almost black) green eye.
i dont even know if im allowed to join...
Davina~~
Kimi and I are on the roof of one of the run-down buildings of Nevaru. The helicopter had dropped us off just outside of the small port, and we'd made the rest of the journey ourselves.
I can hear the distant noises of several different midnight scuffles. Evidently, Nevaru is high on crime. Not surprising, seeing the state everything's in. I look back down at our target--the Thunderbird.
"So, what's the plan?" Kimi asks. "Or are we just going to wing it?"
"Mix of both," I reply. "We'll wait 'till they start to leave, then ambush them. Aim for the sails--if we can damage them, it'll slow the ship, so even if we fail, they probably won't make it to Spiaggia before the explosives detonate."
"Sounds good," Kimi says. "How much time do we have until the bomb goes off?"
"Er, a little less than ten minutes."
"Ah. About the same time it takes to steal a Power," Kimi says, with a grin. "Say...the Thunderbird sounds familiar. Aren't these the pirates we stole from?"
"I think you're right," I reply. "They'll probably be excited to see us."
"Well, this already sounded fun, but now it sounds even more fun," Kimi says. Her eyes are glinting with joy.
My attention turns back to the ship. They've unfurled the sails and have begun to move down the river. Now is our time to strike.
Kimi and I both leap from the roof at the same time, aiming for two different sails. I pull out my daggers, letting them tear through the cloth. I stab them into the wooden post, using them to climb down.
The pirates draw their weapons, spotting us quickly despite our black uniforms. There's two I don't recognize from the Flea Market--a Tenebris and a strange man, who both look exceedingly wealthy by the clothes they're wearing. Must be Black Skull members.
Kimi and I land on the deck, both of us pulling out the weapons we were given. I personally grabbed two pistols--defeating some pirates with swords and cutlasses will be easy. Details are lost in the fray--the clashes of metal against metal blend with the sound of gunshots and the sound of spells being enchanted. I look around for Kimi, and see her plunge a dagger into the leg of a pirate before leaping away.
We meet back up, facing the two of the attackers--the wealthy Tenebris and the pirate's captain.
"You again," She spits. "I thought I was done with you."
"You know each other?" the tenebris asks. His lips curl in disgust. "I wouldn't have chosen you had I known you had bad blood with the Sanukans. But I suppose what's done is done."
We leap at each other, and the fight continues. It looks like Kimi and I are winning, when there's a sudden explosion. The tenebris curses and casts a quick shield around himself. Kimi, the captain, and I all dive out of the way, but it's too late.
I feel myself being blown backwards, a few wooden splinters lodging themselves into my hands and arms I was using to protect my face. Suddenly I'm submerged in water, and I can feel myself sinking under the weight of all my weapons.
I fight my way to the surface, gasping for breath. There's a massive hole in the side of the Thunderbird, and wooden debris litters the water.
"KIMI!" I shout, but there's no response. I curse under my breath and haul myself onto one of the rickety docks, wincing at all the tiny pricks of pain. I lay there for a few moments, panting heavily.
But before I could stand up to search for Kimi, a howl breaks out across the night air.
"Oh, great!" I shout. "Now I've got to deal with wolves, too?!?"
Kimi~
Ten minutes until the explosion. We've got to keep the pirates here for ten minutes, and then we can get out.
Easier said than done. Seems like the pirates are happy to let us stay for as long as we like. Ten minutes are over in a flash--literally.
The boat explodes.
Davina and I are separated the moment the bombs go off. We dive in the safest possible direction, but nowhere is safe--the deck explodes, hurling debris into my skin and throwing me into the air as though I weigh nothing--but I feel like I weigh five tons from the pressure of the concussion squeezing my chest.
My breath is knocked out as I slam into a shredded sail and tumble a few feet. I sink my claws into the cloth and dangle there, panicking for breath. Fire bursts up through the hole below, spreading quickly. I can barely hear anything--it's as though the explosion is still happening, roaring in my ears, deafening the night.
I gasp as air finally enters my lungs again. I'm dizzy now. Just breathe. "Davina?!" I call, but I can't even see her. I can't really see anything; there's too much smoke.
I think the water is to my left--that's where it was before the bomb went off. There's no way to tell until I jump--and I have to jump before the fires reach me.
I slide down a strip of sail and use it as a rope. I swing back and forth, gaining momentum, and launch myself into the air just as the boat gives a heave in its own self-made waves. I'm flung off in a random direction.
Ah. A slight miscalculation. I see, as I sail through the air, the wood of the dock rushing to meet me.
BANG. The dock shudders as I splat onto its surface, first with my right foot, then my knee, and then with my upper body as I skid about five feet to a hard stop against the wall of the dock shed. Blood rushes to my head and I teeter on the edge of passing out. My ankle is throbbing, my nose is bleeding, and loose nail-heads have done more damage than a sword could.
Wolves howl in the distance. Over the roaring of the flames, I hear a displeased shout. Davina! She's out on the dock in front of the shed. Oh, thank goodness she's okay.
"DAVINA!" I yell. She turns around and looks relieved to see me. I hobble to my feet and she comes my way. We're both pretty beat up.
She reaches the shed--and then the second explosion goes off.
