Chatterbox: Blab About Books

The Ultimate CB Book Log
Have you read...

Have you read a book recently?

Enter its name here. This is the 2017 Ultimate CB Book Log. Well, technically starting in 2016, but who cares?

This is a place for us to keep a huge, giant log of books, both for ourselves, and also so other CBers can see what we're reading. Everytime you finish a book--whether you've read it or not--put its name and author here. You don't have to talk about it or anything...you just type in its title. We can discuss books here if you want, but it's not required.

Have fun!

I think this is a great idea, Owlgirl!

Tentacle and Wing by Sarah Porter ****

This was really good, I enjoyed it very much. It was about a girl named Ada who's a chimera (someone born with both human and animal DNA or the DNA of more very than one animal), or 'kime' and must keep it a secret from everyone except for her dad. But when her secret is uncovered, she is sent away to the 'somewhere' she's always heard about that chimeras are sent to. The plot was fresh and new, the writing was brimming with emotion and action, the characters were colorful and un-cliché, and I could hardly put it down.

HELP. THIS BOOK TIS MAKING ME CRY.

Children of Eden, by Joey Graceffa. 12+, I'd say, as there is some violence, drugs, and love scenes. Nothing too bad.

But seriously. This book is making me so emotionally unbalanced. Ash and Rowan....POOOOOR AAAAAAAAAASH! *bursts into tears again*

Has anyone else read this tumtotulus book? (I know that's not how I spell it.) I need help sorting out my emotions here. :^(

Ok, please ignore that frantic post. XD

Here's my review.

Begin huge rants.

Children of Eden by Joey Graceffa. 4 1/2 stars.

The only reason this was not a 5 star read for me is because Eden is a very complex land, so there is worldbuilding stuff just like stuffed in everywhere. The characters are built really well, with good flaws that make me want to scream (yes, that's a good thing), and the description of Eden is lovely, and the storyline is a good one. But because of the worldbuiling, the story can drag for a few pages.

SYNOPSIS: (spoiler-free) (this is off the flap of the book)

What if your very exsistence was illegal? (That's the "What if?" Of this book.)

Rowan is a second child in a world where population control measures make her an outlaw, marked for death. She can never go to school, make friends, or get the eye implants that will mark her as a true member of Eden. Indeed, her kaleidoscopic eyes (that mark her as a second child) may very well give her away to the ruthless Center government.

Outside of Eden, Earth is poisoned and dead. All animals and most plants have been destroyed by a man-made catastrophe. Long ago, the brilliant scientist Aaron Al-Baz saved a pocket of civilization by designing the EcoPanopticon, a massive computer program that hijacked all global technology and put it to use for preserving the last vestiges of mankind. Humans will wait for thousands of years in Eden until the EcoPan heals the world.

As an illegal second child, Rowan has been hidden away in her family's compound for sixteen years. Now, desperate to see the world, she recklessly escapes for what she swears will only be one night of adventure. Though she finds an exotic world, and even a friend the night leads to tragedy. Soon Rowan becomes a renegade on the run.

The first novel from online superstar Joey Graceffa, Children of Eden is a thrilling and completely absorbing new book from one of social media"s brightest young storytellers.

MY RANT/SYNOPSIS: (may include spoilers)

Ok. Had there been less worldbuilding in this book, it would've been amazing. Now, this book does have just about every dystopian (oh yeah, it's a dystopian by the way) cliche EVER. (corrupt government that thinks they're doing the right thing, bisexual love triangle, etc. etc.) But the characters are built really well. The thing is, actually, just like Harry Potter, I can't STAND the MC! (Rowan) My favorite character in the book is her twin, Ash, who is asthmatic.

There are three scenes in the book that made me cry, and I HAVE to get these off of my chest.

The first one is when Ash finds out Rowan is leaving. Forever. But he doesn't know she's never coming back. So the mom is helping Rowan pack in a hurry, and Ash walks in. He helps her pack up while her mom goes out of the room. They have a touching dialogue where Ash is like "Don't worry, it's not forever." And Rowan, in her head, is like "But it is...and I CAN'T TELL YOU!!!" This scene really touched me. I was bawling for a good fifteen minutes and ended up having to put the book down so I didn't get my Interlibrary Loan book wet... haha..

The second one actually takes place pretty soon after the previous one. The mom ends up (HUGE SPOILER) dying trying to save Rowan, and Rowan runs away like her mom told her to. But the whole time I'm reading the next few chapters, I'm going, "BUT WHAT ABOUT ASH?!?! HE DOESN'T KNOW...OH GOODNESS, THIS POOR KID IS GONNA BE CRUSHED, THEY WERE SO CLOSE!!!!"....etc, and insert sniffling and crying.

The third scene takes place much, much later in the book. Or maybe it's earlier? I don't know. Rowan finds out the story of her birth. Look away if you don't want to know. So, Mom and Dad knew they were gonna have a child. They didn't tell anyone yet, and the Dad (who somehow magically has a medical degree or something? I dunno.) does the checkups in place of going to the doctor/hospital. And everything was just fine. Until the day the dad heard two heartbeats. Yes, they were twins. But Mom couldn't bear to kill either. So they were going to raise them together--one in secret, one in the world. Dad didn't like that, but he went along with it. Supposedly. Apparently he was actually modifying a ultrasound device that would abort one of the babies. (Yeah, I know. Let's not talk about abortion here please. Not on this thread at least.) So at the next checkup, he went for Rowan. But, as if she knew, she moved at the last second, hugging Ash in the womb. And instead of hurting Rowan, a beam went through Ash's lung. Yikes. But everything was fine. Then, along comes the day of birth. They just did it at home (please don't try THIS at home without someone that knows what theyre doing!!! XD). Rowan came out first, so she was going to be the first child, the one that got all the attention. But then Ash came out, and he wasn't breathing. They knew they had to make Ash the firstborn, so that he could get medical treatment. And so, Rowan was pushed aside.

(END SPOILERS)

Ok, this post turned out WAY longer than I meant it to. Basically, it's a good, dystopian novel, and I will be reading the next book (and the supposed third?). But a little less worldbuilding in the dialogue, man! XD

End huge rants.
