Chatterbox: Inkwell

Katy sighed and

Katy sighed and picked up a dusty old book with elborate designs, making it stand out in the musky old attic. She sttempted to blow off the dust, but to no avail, and ended up having to wipe it off with her long sleeve. "So much for that trick," she muttered, slowly opening the book, which crackled expectantly.

She screamed and dropped the book, a resounding thud echoing throughout the attic. A mouse had scurried across her bare toes, startling her. The book lay open on the ground to a random page and she stooped down. The letters were carefully written, every word perfectly spaced and red. "Red?" she asked to herself. There was no way that there was red ink back when this book was written. She shuddered and used the dusty end of her sleeve to gently close the suddenly creepy book.

"Tommorow," she whispered, gently lifting up the book and setting it on a rotten rocking chair. She turned the light off and slowly descended the ladder, her thoughts running away from her.

Later in her room Katy grabbed her phone and quickly texted her friends, even though they were probably asleep.

Katy> I found something cool in the attic! Cant wait for u guys to c it! Cya tommorow!

Then, gently setting the phone down on her nightstand, she hopped in bed, pulling up the covers to her chin. "Tommorow." She didn't know what was so exciting about her discovery, but she couldn't wait to find out more about that book.

Brookeira mounted her white steed and sighed, looking behind her at the massive stone castle which towered on the edge of the cliff, looking as if it could slide into the sea at any moment. She smiled softly and returned her gaze to the trail that led into the forest. She could see the sun raising over the trees, which had long, willowy shadows that reached out for her, calling her in. She clicked her tongue and urged her horse forward.

The horse's muscles rippled beneath Brookeira as she shifted on the leather sadle. Her ever watchful eyes scanned her surroundings, catching the slightest movement of a squirrel occasionaly. Eventually her helmet became to hot as the sun started its ruthless reign over the world. She removed it and ran her fingers through long, brown hair. She practically dropped her helmet when three figures appeared on the worn-down path in front of her. She silently scolded her self and continued riding, eyes narrowing as she recognized two of the figures: Danie and her apprentice, Shadow.

"Why hello there," Danie smiled, her face appearing vulpine, fox-like even. "I happened to be looking just for you."

"Oh, what a surpise," Brookiera muttered sarcastically, already having pulled her horse to stop. More or because of chivalry then because of her love for Danie, which really wasn't any at all.

The girl that Brookeira didn't recognise had wings, and wore white. She remembered reading about such creatures, Owl Saints, who were feirce fighters, intelligent in all their ways. "Well," she cooed, her voice suprisingly low and calm, like a lion's purr. She paused for a moment, studying the dazzling knight before coughing. "We would like to accompany you and the princess on your journey."

Princess Abigail watched with interest from her little brown pony, Brandy, who blended in with the forest quite well while Brookeira spoke. "How did y- Wait..princess?" Brookeira exclaimed, her exspression one of pure surprise.

The owl girl nodded and pointed directly at Abigail, who was startled and almost fell backwards off her horse. Brookiera's gaze followed the girl's finger and she met Abigails eyes before growling and turning her horse around to face the princess. "Abigail! What on earth do you think you are doing!!"

Abigail bravely rode forward, head held high like a princess. "I'm coming to save my sister,' she declared, not a stutter in her high-pitched voice.

Brookiera knew there was no turning back now. She, or they, had travelled to far by now. "By golly when we get home.."

Abigail squealed and grinned, "You'll let me come then?"

"Good heavens It's not like I have a choice!" Brookiera rolled her eyes and remembered the Owl Saint's strange words. "How could you tell she was there anyway? Besides, why would I let you theee accompany us?" she asked, turning back to the group.

She smiled and shrugged, "We all have our secrets. But you need us, because we happen to know just how to find your precious princess." Danie nodded approvingly and grinned, her cold eyes meeting Brookiera's untrusting ones. Truth was that Brig had deducted why Brookiera was travelling, with the princess missing and all. She had just spotted Abigail with her sharp-eyes, which were slightly big for a humans, though they still looked natural.

Brookiera frowned in disgust and shook her head, then, unwillingly, agreed. "Alright then. But there will be no untruthfulness. If you take me to somewhere without my princess, there will be consequences."

Danie nodded and stepped forward, "Deal" She reached out and shook Brookiera's hand, quickly recoiling as soon as the moment ended.

"Now," Shadow piped up, "I do believe that we need to travel in..." she pointed towards the North, "that direction."

Brookiera gasped, looking at Shadow."But thats..."

Shadow nodded, "Ogre Territory."

A dreadful silence fell upon the group, the only sound the rustling of the leaves as they shook in the wind. Everyone stared in the direction that Shadow had pointed. Abigail could practically hear the orge's bellowing and shuddered, beginning to regret her descision.

"This. Is. Heaven!!" Evie squealed excitedly, reaching for her fifth peice of pizza and completly ignoring Emily's skeptical look.

"Don't you-" Emily started, before Evie cut her off.

"Don't you scold me! This is heavenly! I am nor going to miss out!" Evie demanded, rolling ner eyes to the ceiling as she took another bite of the pizza.

Katy was almost regretting getting three pizzas, because from the looks lf it they might need four. "Well..." Keli sighed, leaning back on the couch and setting her feet on the beanbag in which Joan was sitting. "What do we do? I suppose we have to get you two home..."

"And how do you propose we do that?" Daisy asked in the midst of a mouthful of pizza. "A Tardis?"

Somebody snorted and immediatly corrected her, "The Tardis. There is only one!" Daisy rolled her eyes and dissmissed the matter, finishing her bit of pizza. Somebody, slightly irritated at being ignored, elbowed Daisy sharply. Dasiy grimaces and glared at her with a from, contrasting Somebody's smug grin.

"Seriously...what do we do?" Phil asked. Switching her gaze from Somebody and Daisy to the rest of the group she almost dropped her pizza, lucky for her the pizza wasnt weighted down by pineapple.

"The Library might be a good place to start..." suggested Serena. "You never know what kinds of mysteries are hidden in some of those books. I found a silver dollar in a book once. I still have it, I think." She slowly stood and walked over to the kitchen to throw away her paper plate. It took her a little while to find the garbage, which was hidden in a cabinet.

"We could..." Katy agreed, breaking the long silence that had followed Serena's suggestion. "But how would we get there? I mean, none of us can drive, I think, and the library is a ways away."

"Might not be best to get our parents involved," Joan said, her mind producing an image of some overly-protective parents reading over their shoulders. Another silence fell over the group as everyone pondered the answer to their dilemma. Except for Evie, who was focused on pizza.

"Hitch-" Hermoine started, only to be cut off by Katy.

"Absoloutly not! Too dangerous. But...." she paused, looking around the room. "Does anyone have any extra bikes?" She asked as Serena re-entered the room. "Either that or we could check out that old thrift shop just a couple blocks from here. The library should be our last resort."

"Who thought this was a good idea again?" Danie shouted over the bloodcurdling roar that just barely drowned out the crashing of trees which thundered to the ground.

"Let me think...yours?" Brig called from the air. She was pushing herself to the max, dodging trees left and right but still managing to maintain a quick pace. The horses were also being pushed to the max. They group had found a small farm and had paid for some horses and a meal. Abigail, much to her despair, had to trade her well-loved pony, Brandy. The horses weren't the fastest, but they were strong and had a lot of stamina from working the fields.

"Say the girl who pointed this direction!" Hissed Brookiera, her horse stumbling under the weight of her armor. Unlike the farm horses, Cinder was built for speed and not stamina. Another roar gave the terrified white horse another burst of adrenaline, the only thing keeping him from breaking. "Cinder won't last much longer and they are gaining on us!"

"What so you propose, fighting them off?" Shadow called from slightly in front of the group. Lucky for her, she knew how to handle a horse. The one she choose was fiesty, but it was also the strongest of the group.

"Could we possibly hide?" Brig asked, flying down slightly lower to dodge a large branch.

"Are you an idiot?" Brookiera shouted in a fury, dodging Brig's wing. "Orges have an amazing sense of smell! All their sense are extremely accurate! Their only problem is how slow they are. The only reason they can keep up with us is because of their long legs!"

"Thanks for the orge lesson," Abigail snorted, dodging a low branch. "Since you know so much about ogres why don't you explain how to survive?" A sudden silence fell over the group, if you ignored the roaring, that is. They realized the depth of the Princesses' statement and newfound courage seeped into their souls.

"Wait, do you hear that?" Brig asked in a loud shout.

"What? The crashing of trees or the roars of orges?" Shadow asked sarcastically, watching as Brig suddenly soared up above the trees, dissapearing for a moment. The group rode, the horses' hooves pounding against the ground as their riders did their best to match the rythm of the horses. Brig returned suddenly, crashing through the trees, although it couldn't be heard above the deafening clatter behind them.

"A waterfall!" she exclaimed,  flattening herself out just above the riders.

"Waterfall? So?" Shadow asked, her eyes remaning in front of her horse.

"Well, its either orges or the waterfall, which honestly seems to be our best chance!" Brig shouted.

"Which way?" Danie asked without a second thought.

"Veer right just a little bit,"  she explained, when suddenly all of the girls, save Danie and Brookiera, screamed as a tree came crashing down, barely missing them. "Hurry!!!"

'You have what?" Somebody asked, turning to Serena, who winced under Somebody's strong gaze. Everyone else, of course, also turned to Serena, suddenly interested in what she had been saying moments before.

"It's a-a...." she attempted to explain again, but with nothing but blank stares in return she finally gave up and shook her head. "I'll just have to show you!" Serena concluded, standing up.

"Uh, okay?" Daisy said, a slight question hanging in the air.

"You live just across the street, right?" Keli asked. She had seen Serena over there many times, but just wanted to make sure. Serena responded with a nod and smiled invitingly, waving the other girls over. Evie grabbed one last piece of pizza before Emily gave her a shove forward.

After some effort and time was spent putting on shoes, the girls headed across the street. Serena opened her door and turned to the large group. "Wait here," she ordered, a silence falling upon the group as she closed the door behind her.

She exited with a large grin, "Access granted!"

"To what?" Phil asked curiously, even she was dying to know what Serena was talking about.

Katy smiled softly and whispered to Joan, "I think I know what it is."

"What?" Joan asked hurridlly, eager to know.

Katy grinned and turned to face the back of Phil's head, knowing it would drive Joan crazy. Did she actually have any idea what it was that Serena was attempting to explain? Not at all.

Joan groaned as she realized Katy's ploy and hurried forward, eager to be the first to see what the items were.

An silence full of wonder and awe fell over the girls as Serena opened the garage door.

"Bikes?" Hemoine asked in disbelief. Even though she had seen bikes before, she had never seen ones of theese proportions, with five seats each. To Emily and Princess Evie they were even stranger for bike were a thing of the future for them.

Joan smiled with relief, but her smile faded quickly and she turned to the beaming Serena. "How on earth are we supposed to steer these?"

"I would suppose it takes practice," Daisy concluded, "especially for Evie and Emily." Already a majority of the girls had forgotten Evie was a princess and called her by her name and not title.

"Well, practice we'll get," Phil stated, stepping into the garage. "Let's test these things out."
