Chatterbox: Inkwell

Katy sighed and

Katy sighed and picked up a dusty old book with elborate designs, making it stand out in the musky old attic. She sttempted to blow off the dust, but to no avail, and ended up having to wipe it off with her long sleeve. "So much for that trick," she muttered, slowly opening the book, which crackled expectantly.

She screamed and dropped the book, a resounding thud echoing throughout the attic. A mouse had scurried across her bare toes, startling her. The book lay open on the ground to a random page and she stooped down. The letters were carefully written, every word perfectly spaced and red. "Red?" she asked to herself. There was no way that there was red ink back when this book was written. She shuddered and used the dusty end of her sleeve to gently close the suddenly creepy book.

"Tommorow," she whispered, gently lifting up the book and setting it on a rotten rocking chair. She turned the light off and slowly descended the ladder, her thoughts running away from her.

Later in her room Katy grabbed her phone and quickly texted her friends, even though they were probably asleep.

Katy> I found something cool in the attic! Cant wait for u guys to c it! Cya tommorow!

Then, gently setting the phone down on her nightstand, she hopped in bed, pulling up the covers to her chin. "Tommorow." She didn't know what was so exciting about her discovery, but she couldn't wait to find out more about that book.

"Brookiera!" Abigail squeaked, running as fast as she could in a wet dress to the riverside.

Shadow lay a hand on the mortified princess' shoulder and looked doubtfully into her eyes. "If they are anywhere, lets hope they washed up on shore at the bottom." Abigail nodded and sniffed, walking over to her horse with her head hanging low.

Shadow and Danie exchanged glasses, a small pang of pity stung at their hearts, more Shadow's then Danie's. Any pity Danie felt or had shown was engulfed in a sense of success. "With Brookiera out of the way..." she whispered, pausing suddenly, a smile creeping onto her pale face. "Abigial! Shadow! Let me go and see if they are alive. You make a fire and dry off, my clothes are already partially dry."

Abigial opened her mouth to speak, but shut it, understanding Danie's wisdom. "Okay...Look really hard!!"

Danie nodded and glanced at Shadow, who was already starting the fire. Did Shadow know her intentions? Did she agree with them? Danie sighed and untied her horse from a tree, for they had all untied their horses from the log. She hopped onto the horse in one fluid movement that she had perfected over their long journey and the horse shook its head in protest, still ehausted from the constant running adn the river. Danie patted the horses neck and urged it forwardm grinning wickedly.

Brookiera and Brig lay washed on the shore, their ragged breathing hidden underneath the constant roar of the waterfall. Mutliple things lay washed on the shore beside them, mostly sticks and twigs. Brig's wing were spread out and one was twisted in an uncomftable looking way. When she woke she was startled by the pain which racked her wing.

Slowly, she sat up, recalling the previous events and silently cursing Brookiera's armor. "Brookiera!" she exclaimed, looking around frantically. She let out a relieved sigh at the armor-clad figure just a few yards away from her.

Brookiera, unlike Brig, woke with a start. She sat up immediatly and looked around frantically, reieved to see Brig was alive and well, save a broken wing. The two survivors slowly stood up and looked around. Brig, with her bird's eye view manadged to make out a familiar looking figure at the top of the waterfall.

Brig nudged Brookiera with her elbow and pointed. "Danie."

Chapter 16!

"I knew i shouldn't have trusted her for a second!" Brookiera hissed as Danie dissapeared behind the trees with a dramatic swish of her cape. A heavy silence fell upon Brig and Brookiera as a new bond began to form between them. Not quite friendship, but an understanding. The understanding that they would need to stick together to survive, to make it back to the group. To do whatever it takes.

Brookiera turned to Brig hopefully for a moment, her not unkind eyes scanning over Brig's wings. Her face fell and she sighed, looking back at the spot where Danie has melted into the trees. "Can you climb...with your wing...?" she asked hesitantly, her voice barely heard by Brig over the roar of the waterfall.

Brig shivered, her white, wet dress clinging to her skin. Even with the specially made fabric which was magically enchanted and layered multiple times, the water was cold, and the harsh wind caused her skin to burn. Her cheeks were pink and rosy and the tip of her nose was turning red. As a St. Owl she had a sort-of immunity to the wind because of her flight, however the water had somewhat disabled that ability.

"Maybe. I can probably manage. It'll warm me up, at least," Brig said with a wry grin.

"Okay. We used up my rope...." Brookiera glanced down at her gauntlets. "I might have to ditch these. My armor isn't the best for climbing but I can't leave it behind."

"I could always leave you behind and try to remember to come back for you."

Brookiera sighed, reluctantly removing her guantlets. "I'll come. I suppose i'll have to..." she glanced over at nearby trees and let out a joyful exclamation of suprise, dashing off into the trees. Brig started after her, beffuddled as a fish.

By the time Brig had managed to catch up to Brookiera, the knight was pulling vines down from the trees and wrapping a thing one around her waist. She looked up, grinning triumphantly at the confused Brig. "There! Now i can tie my shoes and guantlets and helmet to the belt and i wont have to leave any behind."

Brig nodded, silently hoping Brookiera wouldn't fall from all the extra weight. If a sudden gust of wind came and pushed her hanging armor to the side it would presumably knock her off the cliff.

Brookiera stood with a sigh and bobbed her head toward Brig, "Lets get on with it. If we hurry we might have time to sit for a moment."

"They have horses," Brig stated bluntly, causing Brookieras face to fall as they left the trees and headed across the rock shore to the side of the cliff.

Chapter 17~~

"Whoa..." Emily paused, staring at the book that Serena had set in the middle of the table.

"That can not be a coincidence.." Hermoine gaped.

"No...it can't be... ," Katy picked up the book, staring at the name of the author, "but that's my name!"

"And those are us in the chapters," Serena stated.

"But it only goes to chapter 16..." Somebody observed, staring over Daisy's shoulder.

Emily echanged glances with and nodded, "It also skips the odd numbered chapters."

"Odd..." Joan grinned, completely obliterating the mysterious mood with her awful pun. The ground turned to stare at ehr and she shrugged, muttering under her breath as she had at least expected a chuckle.

"Good going..." Keli sighed, exchanging glances with Phil, who was busy staring at the book, entranced.

Evie raised a hand, obviously a habit from being a princess. Nonetheless, the group fell silent and turned to her as she spoke. "The...odd...numbered chapters are missing, correct?" She paused only for a moment before continuing. "But the pages are blank between the written chapters. So that means the words are missing and not pages..."

Emily gasped, "Of course! I have heard of this type of magic... Our story is being written down! Well, will be."

"By whom?" Katy asked, staring once again at the author's name.

"By you, Katy. In the future! In the future you will write this book!" Evie exclaimed, a little to loud for a library.

"That still doesn't explain this missing chapters..." Phil sighed.

"And no one but Katy will know that until the future...but I highly suspect it is because they were written by another person...from my world. The past."

It's so meta!!!!!!!!! Are you guys reading this? If not, you're definitely missing out!

Chapter 18~

"You're positive?!" Abigail gasped, all of the color draining from her face.

Danie solemnly nodded, her exspression suprisingly similar to that of a Winter Elf, whose hearts are as cold as their name. "I'm positive. And there is no way we could climb down that cliff to retrieve their...er....bodies. We must pray that a kind soul finds and gives them the proper burial."

Abigail's eyes teared up and she looked at the ground. 'What would Brookiera do?' Abigail thought, taking a deep breath and standing as tall as her short, delicate build would allow her to. "Let us...move on," she hesitantly ordered. Brookiera was the reason she was here. Now, it was up to Abigial to save her sister. Whether or not Shadow and Danie intended to help her, was beyond Abigail's ability to know.  'Brookiera wouldn't trust Danie. EVER!' Abigail noted, glancing awkwardly at Danie.

Shadow nodded and slowly moved to ready the horses. On the outside, a silent, practically invisible girl was saddling horses, but on the inside she was fighting a battle. Her loyalty to her master and friend, or her pity for the Princess. Shadow glanced at the princess, then shook her head. They would need to get going if they wanted to reach the next village before nightfall, they couldn't afford to retrieve Brookiera and Brig anyways.

Shadow walked over to Abigail, instinctively keeping silent for her years of training to not be seen or heard had become a habit. She gently tapped Abigail on the shoulder, resulting in an exclamation of surprise. Abigail whirled around and released a relieved breath at the sight of Shadow. "The horses are ready," Shadow matter-of-factly stated.

"Of course..." Abigail muttered, picking at the lace on the end of her sleeves uncomfortably. "Lets go then..."

Danie was already saddled and burning with anticipation to get out of there and away from the river. Her gaze met Shadow's and a look of understanding passed between them as Abigail hurried onto her horse. Shadow patted the neck of her black horse, which she secretly called Silence. She smiled softly and gracefully swung over the horse, landing in the saddle without a sound.

Abigail stared back at the river one last time, as if, just maybe, Brookiera would still be alive. As if she somehow had survived. Brig of course, too, but Brookiera was more important to Abigail.

Danie clicked her tongue, snapping Abigail back to the harsh reality of their current situation. "Let's hurry, we might be able to get to a village by nightfall."

Abigail, sighing, nodded. She understood the dangers of the night and knew their urgency to reach a village. She clicked her tongue, silently praying for Brookiera and Brig.
