Chatterbox: KYNGDOM™ Power of Fin

UNDERWATER BALL GOSSIP&

UNDERWATER BALL GOSSIP

The sand is golden, the water is pleasantly bubbly, and everybody who’s anybody in Southeast Kyngdom is here. We’re your proud Sea Anemone hosts, Actiniaria and Hexacorallia, reporting LIVE from the most exclusive event of the year: the Enchantment Above the Sea ball, South Kyndom’s first-ever dry land-themed underwater ball. If you see us milling around, come say hi and give us the dish on all the watery gossip! You’ll recognize us by our wavy pink tentacles (quick shout-out to our sponsor, the Subaqueous Salon and Sea Spa).

Of course, in about twenty minutes, we expect the next Guardian of Fin to be announced, and believe us, the room is simply awash with anticipation. You can’t swing an underwater lasso without bumping into a group of whispering shellfish. But first, let’s turn our attention to the incredibly glamorous attendees and give you unlucky landlubbers listening to our broadcast a little taste of the P-A-R-T-Y.

Land ho, this place is sparkling. Each twenty-foot-tall underwater cactus is decked out in glimmering lights. The sand on the floor has been carefully blended with real gold flakes, creating a shimmering carpet underfoot. The punch is flowing, and graceful seahorses are passing out dry land-themed appetizers: miniature sea cucumber tacos, tiny teacups of coral chili, and nacho towers topped off with smoked seashells. We’re hoping to catch a glimpse of the celebrity chef that the organizers swam in for the occasion—he’s a clownfish who trained off the coast of France.

Most of the guests have adopted a look that we’d have to term “highbrow underwater cowboy.” We’re seeing a lot of denim gowns encrusted in barnacles and diamonds. Some of the wealthier guests are wearing silk bandanas and golden spurs. There’s even a cowboy hat or two—ooh, we’re seeing a scuffle unfold on the dance floor! There’s gold-tinted sand swirling through the water! Hold up one second, we’re getting the 411…apparently a Fangtooth Fish attempted to dance with a Vampire Squid, who turned out to be the date of a very muscular Frilled Shark. The sand just cleared, and neither Fish nor Shark is anywhere to be seen. Security here is no joke!

Naturally, the Powers are here in full force. They’re flexing their powerful…do dragons have muscles? They have to, right? They’re looking fabulous in formalwear specially designed by none other than the untouchable CERES AND COMPANY (we’ll hold for applause). And these drama-prone Kyngdomites even seem to be getting along, at least for now.

We’d be remiss not to mention the cornerstone of the décor: a giant ice sculpture in the middle of the dance floor, surrounded by tantalizing desserts (salt-water granitas, anyone?). The sculpture is carved into the shape of a massive and very realistic rodeo scene, but instead of a cowgirl, the artist depicted a breathtakingly accurate version of our very own Finny—the heir apparent to the Guardian of Fin. The little dolphin is portrayed so accurately that she looks practically real. In fact, if you glance at the sculpture at just the right moment, you can almost see her eyes move. Magical! At the base of the ice sculpture is a keypad that requires a code, but it’s unclear what it’s meant for. Does anyone have any information? Come find us and spill the deets—we’re all tentacles.

The dancing is being put on hold for a moment, because it’s time for one of the much-anticipated activities: some of the lucky guests are about to try their fins at roping sea cows. The massive creatures are being released from a series of gilded pens, while guests shriek and attempt to catch them with lassos made from kelp. This activity certainly fits the theme, but it’s looking like no one can manage to catch a sea cow. In fact, the cows appear to be taunting the guests. We can’t believe it—they’re lining up and dancing a can-can! Hold on, now they’re swimming over the heads of the guests and disappearing into the deep blue of the ocean. The organizers look irate.

Having just slipped over to try a bit of the punch, your faithful correspondents are happy to report that the punch is especially tasty this year. Jeweled Rockskipper!

There’s something a bit different about it…a certain fizz…a tang on the back of the tongue. Perhaps the celebrity chef is trying out a new seaweed-infused simple syrup? In the interest of full gossipy disclosure, we’ve been hearing rumors that the punch is spiked—but we’d have to try another cup in order to report back for sure.

Ooh, Imagine Sea Dragons is about to take the stage: their hair is gelled, their buttons are shelled, and they look ready to rock. Hope they play their hit single, Radioactive (Materials are Leaking Into the Ocean—Thanks a Lot, Humans). Looks like it’s time for these anemones to get their groove on—come find us at the dance floor and tells us what’s really going on at this party. The wilder the rumor, the more we want to hear it! Actiniaria and Hexacorallia out.

"Why are we always late?" I mutter angrily to myself. Capense, who is besides me, doesn't answer. I repeat my question, this time adding:

"And why did I end up being your partner?"

"I heard you the first time," Capense grunted, giving no further answer.

"Ooooh, there's Scarlet," I say after an awkward pause, "HI SCARLET!" Everyone in the room/underwater bubble place turns to look at us. Capense glares. Scarlet blushes. Thimble, who is near Scarlet, waves.

"I'm glad they're here," Capense whispered.

"Humph," I reply, but in my mind I think: me too.

Laria~

I watchas Diamondtail, or whatever her name is, punches in the code at the base of the statue. I look up at the eyes again and watch, waiting. Yes, there is definitely movement in the eyes. There's something trapped in there. Judging by the shape, I'm going to guess. . . Finny. I swim over to Laya.

"Almost got it?" I whisper. She jumps in surprise and holds the bone behind her back.

"I- I don't know what you're talking about!" she cries. I jerk my head up at the sculpture.

"Come on, just keep going. There's something in there. Almost got the code?" Laya relaxes and nods.

"Yeah, sure." She punches in the last few numbers. "This should be it." She presses enter. With a loud hissing and popping, the ice starts to melt off the sculpture.

The dolphin statue slowly starts to crack.  It starts at the beak and spreads across the whole body and across the tail. Then the ice shatters.  One of the ice parts falls near me and I sniff it. Pure chilled water but, I know the source of water. It's from Dagger bay. Something about the ball just chaged.  Everyone is looking right at Finny.

I walk through the crowd. Of course, I could sense a powerful creature from a mile away, but the blasted Powers. Annoying a while ago, even more so now. As much as I would love to blast them with my Relic, I decide not to. This may be compicated. I must wait for Octavia. Meanwhile, when can I DJ? Ah, I see an opening. Better get ready fast.

Now I'm bored.   None of the orderves look appealing.  I can't dance without a partner.  This water is freezing.  And the ornamental feathers I'm wearing feel very very VERY heavy.

I guess I have my satchel with me.  I remove a pad of bark paper and a berry pen.  And do what comes naturally.

Sketch.

Swirls of seashells intertwine with waves, rolling over coral reaching for the light.  A pearly moon cascades over a distant beach lined with emerald trees.  Hindered only by the soft lull of an nightingale's song.

I am woken from my dream with a scream.  It could also have been a loud exclamation.   Bark paper spills from my satchel along with pens and a genorous amount of ink.  I sighed and started picking up condiments from the water.  Another shriek resounded from my area of blindness.  That time I twisted my head around only to be greeted by the two very bright eyes of a dolphin.  A very VERY exited dolphin.

"HI!"

"um, hi?"

"I'M FINNY!"

"I see that"

"THAT FOX JUST REALEASED ME!  IT WAS AWFUL BEING TRAPPED IN ICE.  AND FOR A WHOLE WEEK AND A HALF!! WHY IS EVERYONE STARING AT ME?  DO I HAVE SOMETHING ON MY FACE?  WHAT TIME WILL THE ANNOUNCING OF THE GUARDIAN OF THE POWER OF FIN BE?  OH IM SO EXITED!!!!

He kept talking.   And talking.  And talking.  And- OK you get the point.  I glanced around and noticed a soft pale light emanating from a thin string around finny's neck.  I gasped.

The power of fin.

Me and Sunstroke walk-swim into the ball. The orderves were.....okay i will be honest they looked wierd but they tasted AMAZING!!! And the punch...mmmmmmmmm. It had this weird tang at the back of my toughne though, kinda like seaweed. Gross, but it tasted good at the same time. Then the music starts. Imagine Sea Dragons!!!! Yes!! Their like the landlubber version but UNDERWATER!! Awsom. I find myself dancing next to one of the announcers and yelled exitedly over the music, "HI IM ICICALWHISPER! THIS PART IS THE BEST!" she gives me an amused look and continues grooving out. I swim back over to get some more orderves when i see the deserts. JACKPOT!! I swim over and start stuffing my face. Sunstroke was off dancing with some undersea girl, and i couldnt find a cutr enough boy to dance with. So i find Windswift off in her own world drawing and start swimming over. But before i could get far, there is this loud crack and the ice dolphin starts to melt. A fox was standing with a bone near by. WHAT DO SHE JUST DO? THAT DOLPHIN WAS HOLDING UP THE DESERTS! I watch with dismay as all the tasty sweets go flouting slowly to splat on the sand. I felt my heart, or maybe my stomic shed a tear. But as i was siently greaving for the deserts the dolphin starts to move. Then leap. Then twirl. nd finally ceriously swim over to Windswift and scar her. Then start talking and talking and talking. Somethibg shinny and shimmery was around her neck. Like drums. But not. But maybe. But probably not. As i turned my eyes away from the dolphin i realize that Imagain sea dragons had stopped playing and everyone had frozen to watch the dolphin. Was she important? Well, she wouldnt not be if a gaint dragon was swimming towards her.

The Power of Fin. The Power of Fin gardain.

Claaws didnt care that the Power of Fin gauradin was drozen in icy. She didnt care that it was now free. All she cared about was that it had her brother. And she needed that instrament.

Eith a flick of her tail she told Icy and Ronan that she was going in. If Eico and Cealani were too....out of it to do anything or care, she would do it herself. The dolphin continued talking and swimming playfully as Claaws swimmed over. She didnt even budge as Dragon's shadow fell over her. "You." she barked. The dolphin flipped around faster then a bee and gasped. "Power of Fin. N.o.w.'

The dolphin stared wideeyed at her and syarted reaching for the necklace when the undersea lights flashed and there was a loud crash from somewhere in the kitchen. Suddenly Claaws felt the clothes around her tighten and shift. Her claws were swept off from under her and her wings and tail bound secerly to her sides. She squirmed, but that only made the chains squeeze tighter. Her once beutiful lace was wrapped into an indestructible chain around her, her many braclets, necklace, and wing and tail bands like magnits to her lace, making her compleatly stuck. Well, if she wasnt a Power. She pushed out with all her might against the chain, feeling it buldge and crackled. Suddenly something sharp peices her side. She felt dizzy and weak all at the same time and let go. Amber liquid started seeping from the chains and encircling her. She glanced at Eico and Cealani and saw that their costumes were doing the same. The punch. She suddenly relized they must have put Brazen Goo in the punch. All at once the cheif, the designers, and a few other burly sharks vurst from all the door entrances to the ball. Finny, the dolphin, swam to the back of the ball, her eyes wide and scared.

Claaws knew it. It was a trap. But she ignored it. Now are they all going to die? Then from the middle of the burly sharks and backstabbing celebertys emerged a dark shape, with glowing red eyes. On her back was indeed the boy king, smiling his horribe smile. That smile when he knows hes going to win. And he does.

"You can be free!" Jaaws snarls and the clownfish and designers shaje their heads, look at Jaaws, and retreat to the corrners of the ball to hide.

Catatrophe leaped off of Jaaws' back and swam towards Finny. "I will take that." he snarled ripping the necklace from her neck.

This is it. Theyre all doomed.

Finding Finny, coming soon to theaters near you!

~Icicle 'Icy' Soul

"That dolphin has the Power of Fin..." I hiss. (Hey, Admins, I know I'm not supposed to ank the Q&A right now but......is it OK what's just happened? In the later comments? Finny getting released? Ect?)

OH NO THEY TOOK THE POWER OF FIN!!! I whinny in fear, wondering why I didn't escape while I could. And then somehow, Caelani recovers from the Brazen Goo and darts toward me, trying to capture or attack me. I settle for attack, cantering as fast as I can, but Caelani is faster. His talons close on my flanks and draw me in. I buck and rear, trying to drive him off, but he just holds on and waits for me to get exhausted.

I stop, realizing it's pointless. Laying a protective hoof over the Power, I glare daggers at him. "Don't even think about it, fox-breath."

He just grins, shoving a bag over my head.

Everything goes dark.

Catastrophe. Here. Now. People gasp. Claaws shrieks in pain, writhing on the floor. And then...

A fight breaks out. Well, that is to say, I charged Catastrophe. Grinning, he swam away at an inhuman speed. Then I hit the wall.  I groan. But I can't stop. Not now. Lives are on the line, and the Powers can't really help. Catastrophe passes the stage, throwing a large bass (the instrument) at me. I dodge, but the dessert table can't. An almighty crash resounds around the room as all manner of undersea on land-themed desserts are crushed and tables snap in two. He passes the backstage, screams from around the dome fogging my brain. Caelani is attacking a horse (that punch was definently spiked), Icy lights a firework, more screams... Wait, Icy lighted a firework? As I swim past, I try to tell Icy with my eyes to aim it at the lighting, and she understands, thankfully. A scream, but not a human one. The firework hits a light above the stage, a snap, a crash, and Catastrophe has been tangled up in a large wire. But he isn't upset.

"The ball ends here," he says, holding up the Power of Fin.

An explosion. Debris. Destruction. The building tears in half, and everything starts floating to the surface. I see Icy, and Claaws, and...

Then I am hit by a large shard of glass, and all I see is black.

(PS. Admins, if you don't want the dome to explode, then you can remove that part.)

submitted by Ronan
(July 25, 2016 - 11:14 am)

I stop a second before hitting the roof of the dome. It's so big, I'd forgotten it was there. I float uncertainly, scanning the room below me.

I can see now that only a few people collapsed. Guests are swimming everywhere, and there's a dragon being strangled by chains that seem to be covered in some sort of goo. Not just one dragon. Three. I can't see the floor through the pandemonium.

The ice sculpture cracks and breaks, and there's a dolphin there among its remains. Does that mean the sculpture blinking was real? It must have been, because now the dolphin swims away into the crowd and is gone.

The first dragon breaks its chains and starts attacking a kid with a crown. More stuff is breaking. It's too loud for me to think. Something explodes behind and below me, and the dome shatters.

I don't know how I avoided getting knocked out. Now it's quieter, but huge chunks of glass are falling through the water. Everyone I can see is swimming up towards the surface. No one came with me, so I don't have anyone to look for. Somehow that scares me. I'm not getting anywhere by staying still, I think, and then realize the stupidity of that thought. All the same, I start swimming again, the same direction everyone else is going.

Sorry if this was boring. I want to give someone these extra pills I have (the ones that let you breathe underwater). Does anyone need some?

Claaws is getting strangled by a dress, catastrophe's riding jaaws, and finny looks like she's about to burst into tears.   Oh goose feathers.

I dive down over to claaws and bring my talons through the crimson fabric.  It's barely scathed.  Frustrated I try to remove every peice of jewelry in reach.  They just squeeze tighter.  A small aura of brazen goo emanates around claaws.  Nothing I do is proving at all helpful.  I can feel tears brimming behind my eyes but I push them back. I hook my talons into the chain and bite down, hard.

The taste of blood is raw on my tongue along with the unmistakable flavor of the brazen goo.  I can feel a headache coming on but I don't care.  The chain is broken.   Claaws is weak, but she manages to shake off the dress and slice through the jewelry.  Icy gallops over and helps remove the never ending mass of diomand encrusted clasps and ribbons.

Oh I have to go!  See you later!
