Tray-

The air hung with the hot stench of blood. My body had long since gone limp with pain. My mind regestered nothing but the horrificly rhythmic sounds of the knife going into me being twisted and coming out again. All I could do was scream. Blake had already thrown up a couple times. Nick looked sick to his stomach too. Hiporborean had this crazy phsyco man grinn on his face, and he was laughing. The knife slid out painfully and I screamed. I don't think I've ever been so terrified, or screamed more in my life. Hiporborean let out a laugh, then patted Nick on the back. "Looks like we finally took down the great Thanantos Martin!" Nick looked like he was gonna be sick. I knew that I was covered in blood, I probably looked like one of those operations in the ER that goes wrong. Blake looked like he wanted to leave. He held a disgusting-smelling trash can and stuck his face in it. "Um, y-yes I- I guess we, uh (he cleared his throught) did," Nick said whiter than a sheet. Just then there was a loud bang and Jenifer and Sam emerged from the hall. "Oh my gods," Sam said when they saw me. I moaned. They'd both gone white. My head lolled to one side, looking at them. Hiporborean drove the knife into my thigh and twisted it. I let out another horrific scream. Sam looked like she might faint. Nick cleared his throat and stepped in front of me. "This is what happens when you mess with my plans, understand?" He sounded more disgusted than angry. My friends were speechless. Hiporborean pulled the knife out and I screamed again. I started to see black spots. I knew I was going to pass out soon enough from blood loss. I moaned again trying to get them to do something. Eventually Jenifer saw Blake. She lost her mind. "HOW COULD YOU YOU FREAK!! CAN'T YOU SEE THEY'RE KILLING HER?!" Jenifer lunged at him before he could even get a word out. Her sword out she was poised to kill, no question. Sam leaped into action, pinning Nick to the ground before he even understood what was happening. I only heard what was happening because my eyes had long since shut, not like my brain could comprehend anything but whatever right? I processed enough to know that Hiporborean left first, just as soon as Sam jumped on Nick. There was the sound of swords clashing and blades cutting skin, a few yells and some groans. Soon enough it was Nick's turn to leave. He told Blake to go with him then in a blast of heat they were gone. I heard footsteps and opened my eyes as much as possible. Sam and Jen both looked horrified. I groaned. "H- h- help." I managed. Then my eyes shut once more from strain but I heard and felt everything that happened next. Sam told Jen to go find Kathrine. Jen argued saying she was not leaving me like this but eventually, as always, Sam won and Jen left. Then Sam tried to pick me up but I screamed in pain as her hands touched wounds from where the knife had gone through the full extent of my body from one side to the other. She put me down and instead picked up my knife (the one Hiporborean had used) and put it away. Then she sat down, thinking. Eventually Jenifer came back with a slightly banged up Kathrine who was limping. Kathrine ghasped when she saw me. They all exchanged some words I didn't have the energy to hear and soon enough the air itself lifted me off the table (thank you Jen!) and I was slowly carried out of the room. I managed to stay concious until we got outside the building. By then the blood lost got to me and I passed out.

By Hestia I mean the curse of Hestia.

Sam-

Tray’s body was a mess. Her clothes were covered in blood and her face had lost all color. As we ascended the stairs of wherever we were, Jen began to lose her strength.

“Can’t – hold – on – much- longer,” she whispered, her eyelids drooping.

“Let her go,” I ordered and lay my arms under Tray’s levitating body. She had passed out so I doubted that she would care if I touched her or not.

Jen sank to the floor, gulping in mouthfuls of air like someone who hasn’t drunk in years.

“What will we do?” Katherine cried, covering her face in her hands. Then suddenly she yelled, “NO!” and grabbed Tray’s arm. “No, you cannot leave us now!”

“Katherine, what’s wrong?” Jen demanded.

“She’s dead,” she said and disappeared into thin air.

“D-dead?” I put my ear on Tray’s blood-covered chest.

No thumping.

I placed my fingers on her wrist.

No pulse.

“Tray?” I whispered, tears already falling from my eyes. Memories of Nell and her running through my head like movies. I felt someone put their arm around me, but all I could do was look at the body.

“Sam, we can’t do anything for her now,” Jen told me.

I could only sob. “Nell… Tray…”

My mouth fell open, “Hestia.”

OK if Tray dies again she has to become a god or goddesses patron so I'm gonna change it a bit so she's not dead yet if that's ok?

Tray-

I drifted in and out of conciousness, only catching a few words each time I was concious. I was aware though of the pain throughout my whole body each time I came to. At one point I came to long enough to hear Sam say something about Hestia. It took all my strength but I managed to say, "Not, dead, yet." Then I was unconcious once more. When I finally came around completely I was in a bed that reaked of blood. I groaned and immediately Sam, Kathrine, and Jen were there. "Are you OK?" Sam asked. I groaned in response. The holes and cuts Hiporborean had made in my body were still there. I could feel each of them still bleeding. They fed me as much nectar and ambrosia as they dared. I came close a couple times but I never burst into flames thankfully. Eventually the smaller cuts faded away and the holes just became semi-deep gashes all over my body. There were many in my legs. My arm had almost been severed at the shoulder apparently, as well as many others in my stomach and even one in each hand. They were then cleaned out and wrapped up. Later on I took a shower at the hotel we were at without too much agonizing pain after the nectar and ambrosia. When I finished my shower I changed into sweat pants and a t-shirt after rewrapping all my wounds. Anything else would have been murder on my already horrific injuries. I was helped into a bed and told to stay there by Sam. But I didn't want to just sit there, I wanted revenge. "C'mon Tray, no one has endured more pain today than you have." Thunder rumbled. Jen yelled, "Well it's true!" at the ceiling and I laughed as best I could without causing too much pain. "Well looks like we're not going anywhere for a while huh?" I asked. Sam shook her head. She, Jenifer, and Kathrine all looked troubled. I figured they were imagining my body after Hiporborean had finished abusing it. I however could not get the image of his psychotic grin as he was killing me. I knew it was going to haunt my nightmares for a while. It had looked somewhere between a killer clown and a psycho from a horror movie. In fact when everyone finally fell asleep it haunted my dreams. The pain, his face, the screaming, the pain. It all haunted me. I woke up a 4:00 in the morning, screaming. Sam shot up off the other bed, Jen fell off the couch, and then Kathrine tripped over her in the dark. Sam rushed over to me. "Tray what's wrong?!" I shook my head and rubbed one of my wounded hands accidentally making it bleed again. "Tray! Don't do that!" Sam sounded like she was scolding a 5-year-old for stealing a friend's toy. She rewrapped my hand, again. And I fell into another troubled sleep. About halfway through this one though Hades showed up. He ran over and hugged me. I screamed in pain and he moved away. Something I never thought I'd see was happening. Hades was crying. Not sobbing like a normal dad would be, but one, maybe two tears slipped out of those black eyes before they hardened once more. "What is wrong with you?! How could you let them do that to you?!" he asked desperately. "And why didn't my brother's children help? Oh I know it's because they care for no one but themselves!" "DAD STOP!" I shouted. "I couldn't save myself because I was strapped down, and if you haven't noticed, I'm not Hercules! And my friends couldn't help because they were locked in a cage!" "They got out!" "Yeah, they did, then they SAVED ME!" I shouted. Hades looked at a loss for words. I realized my eyes had gone black. They changed back to gray and I blushed. "I'm sorry, I just hate it when you act like they did nothing. They always help me, and have saved me more than once," I muttered, slightly embarrassed. His eyes soffened. "I know. I love you Tray." Then I woke up.

Sam-

I had brought them to my childhood
house. I didn’t know exactly why; I just felt it was the right thing to do.
Everything was the same when we entered the house. The walls were the same
color, the carpet was still there, but no pictures of me. Not one little sign
that I existed. Did Mom even live there anymore?

I brought them to the guest room where
we lay Tray on the bed and I began to study the wounds. As I was doing this Jen
shoved huge doses of Ambrosia and Nectar into Tray’s dry mouth.

Tray woke sometimes but immediately
drifted back into her world of unconsciousness. Jen slept on the couch and
Katherine lay next to her on a blow up mattress.

Tray scratched open her wound and I
had to rewrap it again then I walked out of the sick room and into the hall.

There were five doors, three on one
side and two on the other. To the right was the sick room, Mom’s room and the
bathroom, on the other side Nell’s door and mine.

I walked down to the end of the hall
and hesitantly opened the door to my room. Everything way the same as it had
been seven years ago when I’d run away.

The walls were lavender and a large
window looked out on the dark landscape. My loft bed was still made; my books
were in the same place like they’d stayed back in time. Mom had never gone back
into the room, had she?

“Do you know this place?” Jen came in
right behind but I didn’t bother to turn around.

“No… I mean, yes…  Actually, not that well…” I muttered.

“This is your room.”

I turned around to face Jen in the
dark. “How do you know?”

“On your desk is a paper that says Sam
Wright on it.”

Before I could answer, a door opened
downstairs and Jen drew her sword.

“No, Jen, I know who it is.”

*

In the kitchen, Mom was standing with
her back to me, talking to a guy across from her. He had shortly cropped brown
hair and blue eyes, which suddenly directed themselves at me.

“Abi, there’s someone right behind
you.” Mom spun around. She looked the same as she had seven years ago. Her hair
was white blond like mine; she wore contact lenses and had tan skin. The only
difference between us was our eyes; hers were brown while mine were green.

I stepped out of the shadows saying
nothing.

“Samantha!” She breathed. “Where are
your glasses?”

I smiled. “I don’t usually wear them.”

“Come here.” She opened her arms and
embraced me. I couldn’t remember the last time I’d been hugged like that.

“Mom, who…?” I gestured to the man.

“I’m Ashton.” He shoved his hands in
his pockets looking uncomfortable.

“Are you-,” I inquired.

“Married? No, he’s my boyfriend, but
why are you here?”

I recounted what happened. Then she told
Ashton that he’d have to wait and we ran upstairs to help Tray.

Gotcha EM! Have fun on your vacation!

Tray-

When Sam walked in with her mom I was totally shocked. They looked so much a like it was like seeing double. Sam's mom gasped when she saw me. "What do they do to you at that camp?!" I groaned and sat up. "It's ok Miss. W, this happens to me all the time." Immediately she went into full-on mom mode. "Sam go get the first aid kit and some rubbing alcohol." Sam went to go get the stuff and when she came back Sam's mom fixed me up completely. By the time she'd finished, all my wounds had a fresh bandage and felt better than before by far. "Don't you dare get out of that bed. If you do the wounds will open up and start to bleed again. Got it?" I nodded. "Good, now get some rest." I lay down and fell asleep imediately. My dreams were so troubled and nightmareish it became impossible to stay asleep. When I woke up I heard footsteps and immediately pretended to be asleep. Just in time, Sam and her mom walked in. "Check on Tray," Sam's mom ordered. Sam came over and checked my wounds. "She's fine." "Let me have a look." While Miss. Wright checked my wounds they started talking. "Sam why did you run away?" "I had to. Nell and I weren't safe here. I needed to get to camp." "Then why did you never come back?" Miss Wright asked. I began to feel intrusive. "No reason to. Nell was at camp. I needed to protect her. And Chiron needed my help. I couldn't just leave." Sam sounded annoyed. "Sam what happened to Nell?" You could feel the tension in the air. "I noticed she wasn't with you. I know you wouldn't just leave her. Sam didn't say anything for a long time, so I did. "She died," I said. I sat up groaning. "What? How?" Miss Wright asked. "She was murdered by a boy called Travis. He was under Jenifer's influence," I explained. "Jenifer?" "She was being brainwashed by Uranus and Nick." "Oh Sam, why didn't you tell me?" Everyone broke into silent tears at once. Sam and her mother hugged and started to sob. Feeling invasive I lay back down with some difficulty and fell asleep.

My dream started like this: I was walking into the same flower shop that I'd met Nick in when he blew it up. This time it wasn't in ruins. I walked to the counter and for some reason asked the cashier for a lotus flower. He turned and went into the back room. "What's the problem now?" Nick asked. I turned around and there he was, sword and all. "Get away from me." I spat. He laughed. "I notice that here in your dream you don't have the wounds." I rubbed the hand I'd messed up eirlier and winced. "Why? Why did you let him do that?" I asked in a small voice. "I didn't think he'd do that much. I just figured it'd be a few cuts and then he'd kill you." I rolled my eyes. "Yeah, 'cause that'd be so much better." Nick cracked a smile. "Yes, it would have been. Then I'd only need to kill you once more and you'd be done. For good." "Why do you hate me?" I asked suddenly. "What?" "I mean, why is it that you can't stand me, that I'm always first on your list to kill?" He frowned. "That isn't what I came here to tell you." "Forget what you were going to say, why do you hate me so dang much?" "Well besides the fact that you always mess up my plans," Something flashed across his face. "You'll find the answer in memories." Then the dream was over and I woke up. "You'll find the answer in memories? What the heck did that mean? Nick spoke in riddles now too? "Gosh I need a vacation." I sat up and moaned. Jenifer and Kathrine turned around from watching TV, and Sam looked up from what looked like a really old book. "What the heck is that supposed to mean?" Jenifer asked laughing a bit. I explained my dream and the part about Nick talking in riddles. "If even big bag Nick is gonna parade around talking like an old English man then I'm gonna lose it!" Nick and Sam exchanged a quick glance, then they exchanged a glance with Kathrine who nodded. "Ya, that's really weird," Jenifer said. I got the feeling I wasn't being told something.

That's okay. :D By the way, the words in italics are the dream.

Sam-

Though Tray had no idea what Nick was talking about, we – Katherine, Jen and I – did, because it just so happens that I’d had almost the same dream only an hour before.

I arrived in a flower shop, the same flower shop in which Tray had been in her dream. I walked to the counter and bought a white rose – Nell’s favorite flower – and, surprisingly, she appeared the moment I got my change.

“Hi Sam," she greeted me softly.

I didn’t say a word, just gave her the rose.

“Memories are powerful things, you know,” she said, sniffing the flower. “They can help in so many ways.”

“What – what do you mean?” I wondered.

“You don’t know yet, Sam. When you are dead, you will understand. It all becomes so much clearer… I can recall every memory I’ve had since I was born. It’s comforting.”

“Do you remember how you died?”

Nell didn’t answer. “I think I’ve told you enough already. You’ll know what I mean the second you wake up. I miss you, Sam.” Then she disappeared.

I now knew what she’d meant. We had to go to the Underworld and find Nell; she would tell us the answers to all our questions.

“Why are you guys being so…so secretive? Just because I’ve almost been stabbed to death doesn’t mean I’m dumb.”

“No… You were dumb before that,” Jen sneered.

I shot her a you’d-better-shut-it-look then told Tray about my dream.

“Nell knows. She knows exactly what she’s talking about… The only problem is getting past my mom.” I paused. “She won’t let you out for a while.”

“But this is about saving the world!”

“Can’t you just make a crack in the ground, jump in and take us down with you?” Katherine inquired.

“No… Too many people. We have to get to the nearest entrance. And that’s-“

“In California,” Katherine said.

“We’re in Oklahoma right now… It means more travelling.” I started to pace. “Wait! We can take the old bus.”

“The old bus?” All three of them exclaimed.

“Yeah… Mom’s brother had a school bus when he lived with us, but when he left… Well, he left it here.”

“And you know how to drive it?” Tray sounded skeptical.

“He gave us driving lessons.”

“When you were six?!”

“No, when we were four.”

Tray-

"Since you were four?" She nodded a proud smile plastered on her. "Okay, fine, we'll take the old bus for the sake of having no other way to go," Jenifer said holding her stomach. I was feeling the same. If Sam had learned when she was four then how the heck were we supposed to trust her four year old memory? "All right then somebody's gonna need to help me outa here," I said. Sam nodded. "Okay, Jen, help me with Tray." "NO! Not her! She'll probably just drop me." Jenifer snickered. "Probably." Sam rolled her eyes. "Honestly. Whatever, Kathrine, help me then." They helped me get out of bed and I grimmaced. Kathrine stepped on my foot which had a particularly bad gash on it. I screamed. "Careful!" I snapped. Kathrine nodded. "Sorry." I gritted my teeth and made it out of the room with only mildly horrible pain. Sadly, by the time I got to the exit (a window) I was panting. "How in Hades am I supposed to get down there?! Much less out of a window!" I practically shouted. "Shush! Okay, okay, lemme think." Sam thought quickly and came up with the last thing I expected, or wanted. "Jenifer! Carry Tray out the window with air!" I was completely shocked. "Really? Gosh someone gets nearly stabbed to death and suddenly they've got a death sentince above their head. God, remind me never to put myself in a life threatening situation with you guys," I muttered, rolling my eyes. "Shut up, Tray," Jenifer said while starting to lift me up. "Oh gods save me," I muttered. Jenifer rolled her eyes. "Honestly Tray." Sam put her hands on her hips. "Hey! Death by falling out a window while severly damaged already about to happen! I'm entitled to speak my mind!" "For goodness sakes! Jenifer just lower her down." So Jenifer did. She lowered me to the ground but dropped me when I was about a foot above it. I screamed out in pain. "JENIFER!" Sam shouted. "What? It was an accident!" I moaned and flipped over. Everything hurt all over again. Some of the wounds had started to bleed again. Sam came next and helped me up. Then came Kathrine and finally killer Jenifer. Sam helped me sneak around to the garage without making too much noise. Just enough to scare off a small bear, not a large one. She helped me into a seat and Kathrine sat next to me. Jenifer sat across the isle and Sam sat in the driver's seat. "You sure you know how to, ow, drive this thing?" I asked panting like a dog. "Positive." She had this crazy grin on her face, and when the bus lurched before actually starting up my stomach decided then was a good time to run for the hills. "Gosh Sam! Get it together!" My bloody hand gripped the now bloody seat in front of me so hard my knuckles turned white. Sam took off at an unnatural speed. It took us 3 hours to reach California at the speed she was going. "I'm pretty sure I left my stomach at the last town we passed; can I go back and get it?" I asked. I was now paler than what was humanly possible. I was dead-man pale. I was also starting to get a little dizzy, almost every single one of my wounds had started to bleed again, and the blood loss was making me dizzy. "Nope, 'cause we're here," Sam said pulling to a rough stop in front of the Hollywood sign. I groaned. "Gosh Tray what did you do?" Sam asked as she walked over to us. Kathrine took off the seat belt and literally fell out of the seat. Jenifer was green. "You should be worried about Jenifer. She looks like the hybrid child of the Hulk and Green Goblin," I muttered. Jenifer shot me a death glare. Sam rolled her eyes once more. "Gosh Tray, Kathrine help me please." Kathrine and Sam spend the next 15 minutes re-dressing my wounds and then finally we stood in front of the Hollywood sign. "Man Charon is going to kill me," I groaned as I opened the door. "Why?" "Because every time I show up and tell my dad about some injury I've got he lowers Charon's salary for not noticing." Jenifer laughed. "Seriously?" "Seriously." We walked into the Underworld entrance. Charon greeted me. "So what am I at now Charon?" "Fiftey thousand madam." "Wow, it's a new record." "What's he talking about?" Kathrine asked. "That's the number of times I've been to see my dad with an injury." "How many times have you come to visit him?" "Fifty thousand and one." We crawled into the dingy and Charon set sail to Hades palace. "So, what's the plan here?" I asked. "We go to the Fields of Asphodel, find Nell, ask her what she meant, and we leave. Hopefully we don't see your dad." I snorted. "Yeah right." Charon docked the dingy and we got off. I threw him a dracma. "Thanks." He sailed away without a word. It took 20 seconds for us to find Nell. Considering she'd decided to stand right in front of us. "Oh hey Nell." I did a small meaningless wave. Sam stepped up, a sad smile on her face. "Nell we came to ask what you meant in my dream," Sam said. She nodded and motioned to me. "Oh, right. Talking to the dead is a Hades thing." I stepped up but Nell motioned me closer. She whispered in my ear the answer. I could never have expected what I heard: "Nick's still in love with you Tray."

//Jenifer//

"Great, well that's reassuring. We're going to let an inexperinced driver take us to California in an old school bus. Tray, can't you just make a giant hole that we can go through?" She shook her head. "If I did, I'd explode." "Katherine?" She too shook her head no. "Well, I would fly us there, but then I'd die." Tray muttered something and I pushed her, though not as hard as I usually would. See, I'm generous. Anyways, Tray, Katherine, and I stayed in the living area while Sam and her mom were arguing in the other room. "But mother, it's a save-the-world situation!" "Look, I don't care, if the world might blow up in a few seconds! I'm not losing you...like I lost Nell..." It's like she punched me in the gut, it's the same feeling whenever someone mentions her name. I cough uncomfortably and press my ear against the wall to hear them better. "Look, mother, I have to do this. I'm fourteen, and anyways, I won't be alone, there'll be Tray and Jen and Katherine, I'll be fine. And Jen...she didn't mean it, any of it, you can't blame her." My chest tightened up when I heard her say my name and I realized they were talking about how I...you know...and Nell... "Alright. If you say so, I guess that I wouldn't be able to stop you from going anyways." It seems like her mom is agreeing, "Just wear a jacket, it's cold out there, darling. And don't crash the bus, let the other girls drive if you're getting tired, and remember to drink plenty of water." I hear Sam agree and their footsteps walking back into the room. I jump onto the couch before they enter and fiddle with my sweatshirt strings like I'd been doing that all along. "You guys ready?" We all nod and begin to collect our few belongings. "So, where's this bus?" I ask Sam. She shifts on her feet, "Well, we don't know."

God, remind me never to put myself in a life-threatening situation with you guys," I muttered, rolling my eyes. We looked for hours for the stupid bus. It took 5 minutes for me to wuss out because of my injuries and it was just Sam, Kathrine, and Jenifer looking. I swear I heard Jenifer ask Sam if she could just leave me here because I was useless. I yelled back something about traitors and Nell and after that there was no talking. Suddenly Sam screeched. “What?! What is it?!” I shouted. “I found it!” It was a huge yellow school bus stuck behind a couple of branches. “Oh gods save me,” I muttered. “Don’t be a wuss,” Jenifer snickered. “Shut up.” Sam helped me get to the bus without making too much noise. Just enough to scare off a small bear, not a large one. She helped me into a seat and Kathrine sat next to me. Jenifer sat across the aisle and Sam sat in the driver's seat.
